This sounds counter intuitive. But is there a way to disable the smart switch wifi capability ?

No, what you can look to do is to set it up with your wireless network, but prevent the router from allowing it access to the internet. If you leave the switch in the default state it will broadcast its default wireless name in adhoc mode.
