Can this be wired to work or am I just out of luck? There is a copper ground in the back.

  @Kecyre,

From what i can tell, you're switch is wired differently to a normal household switch, where there are traditionally both a live and a load wired in the box. 

 

In similar situations, it looks like the white wire may be carrying the power back to the light, and not actually operating as a neutral. Which would mean that this box is lacking a neutral and isn't compatible. For our switches to be installed there has to be live, load, ground, and neutral connections in the box.

  @Kecyre yea looks like you are missing the neutral wire.  It will not work.
