What is the difference between Kasa and Tapo?

The key difference is that Tapo will cover more categories of smart home and IoT devices, such as Smart Hubs, sensors, smart thermostats, and advanced security cameras, as well as increased compatibility with third-party services and protocols such as Apple HomeKit and the Matter Protocol.

Kasa is expected to continue releasing and updating products for its four core product lines: Smart Switches, Cameras, Plugs, and Lighting; while Tapo will begin to expand into new product lines, such as sensors, door locks, vacuums, and hubs for its own low-energy protocol.

@Riley_S DONT LINK THEM. You will not be able to unlink them once you do. Everything I read said to unlink you have to delete. Never says you can separate them again. Very disappointed

Hey @Jlew,

You are correct that the two are linked because the integration basically sets up your TP-Link ID to use both a Tapo and a Kasa Account. Changes to your account such as this  will often require more work to undo than it is to link them.

Is there a reason that you are looking to seperate them out again?

After linking your Kasa and Tapo accounts, you can continue to use the Kasa app to control your devices, even going so far as deleting the Tapo app if you wish. The two use a similar backend, so it is more of an opportunity to control your devices in either app.

If your Kasa devices are crowding out your Tapo devices, you can also always add the Kasa devices to a separate home within the Tapo App
