Model: Kasa HS200   Kasa HS210
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.0.9

I had panic enough wondering if I'd wired everything correctly, but everything wired okay.

I installed two Kasa Smart Switches side by side.   I tried to set up the HS200 first through the app. It continually failed to connect to my wifi.   I reset it, rebooted the router node (I have a TP-Link mesh so I didn't need to reboot all three stations), rebooted the smart switch TWICE, and restarted the app at least once.  There is good wifi signal where the switches are located, and only three other clients on that particular TP-Link node.  I've read / viewed instructions on setting up the Kasa device at least 10 times, so I followed it to the letter.  After the 8th try, it connected and Kasa recognized the device. I think I restarted the app at least three times during the process as well, BTW.

So, I then went to set up the HS210.  Same process.  It finally connected.  The only thing I noticed that I didn't see in any of the instructions  this pop-up message that said "Allow Kasa to connect to a temporary network?"  After allowing it and going back and forth to see if it would take my wifi password, it finally connected as well. Did this have something to do with it?

I have two other smart switches I'd like to install.  I would prefer not to go through the hit and miss of setting these other devices up.  I know my wifi's good, and apparently I wired the switches correctly.  What was the issue / problem I can avoid so I have a smooth set up?  As mentioned, they're connected now, but I don't know why they didn't connect in the first place.  Thank you.

  @Big_W,

Yes, that prompt for the temporary network is a requirement for the setup - otherwise, you have to go to your phone settings and connect to the Wi-Fi network being broadcast by the Smart Plug (the temp network).

You can find the instructions on the manual method in this FAQ: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/946/

If your phone does not seem to want to stay connected, you can try to manually connect or turn off your mobile connection as your phone may be automatically disconnecting from the plug's WI-Fi when it sees that there is no internet connection through it.

Essentially, once the device is seen by your phone, you will be asked to connect to the temporary setup network broadcast by the plug. While connected to the plug's Wi-Fi, you will be providing the Wireless credentials and basic setup. The plug will then reboot itself to connect to your home Wi-Fi. at this point you will see that the temporary wi-fi should be gone and the indicator light should show that it is setup.
