Well, "it's early", but it certainly helped. 

 

Once I got the firmware updated on the primary node, I was able to reserve an individual ip address (for my NAS), but unlike every other system I've used, I couldn't find a way to simply reserve a 'block' of addresses.

 

It was also really glitchy (but ultimately successful) to add a node. I suppose there's a chance that was caused by the fact that I changed the default primary LAN address and subnet mask, to match my old system.

 

New trick (same as the original trick): When I 1st got it working this morning, I was getting great wifi speeds; close to the 1G fiber limit when using wife's new ipad pro and slightly slower on other wifi devices depending on age. I was also getting typical near-1G speeds on my ethernet wired computers in the house. Wifi speeds are still fine, but ethernet to PCs is back to 90M/sec (all tests using Ookla). Even taking ethernet directly from primary node to a PC with no other connections is still at 90M/sec. Swapping the (known good) cable for another known good cable gives the same result, so it's got to be in the hard-wired section of the primary node. Rebooting the network didn't help.

 

I'm thoroughly disgusted with the thing at this point.

Can you provide me with the deco model and the hardware version? I want to see something. THe hardware version can be found on the bottom of the deco.

 

As for reserving a block of address see if this helps (It's going to annoy you FYI)

 

TP-Link Deco systems allow you to reserve specific IP addresses for devices on your network through a feature called "Address Reservation". This ensures that designated devices always receive the same IP address from the Deco's DHCP server. 

 

While Deco systems don't have a specific setting to "reserve a block" of addresses at once, you can achieve this by performing the following steps:

 

  1. Access the Deco app: Launch the TP-Link Deco app on your mobile device.
  2. Navigate to Address Reservation:
    • Tap "More" in the bottom right corner.
    • Tap "Advanced".
    • Tap "Address Reservation".
  3. Add a reservation:
    • Tap the plus (+) icon or "Create" or "Add" button to create a new reservation.
    • Choose to "Select from Client" to choose a device that is currently connected, or manually enter the MAC Address of the device.
    • Enter the desired IP address for that device.
    • Tap "Done".
  4. Repeat for each device: For each device within the block you want to "reserve," repeat step 3, assigning it a specific IP address within your desired range. 

 

Important notes:

  • IP Address within DHCP range: While you are reserving addresses, it's generally recommended to choose IP addresses that fall within the Deco's configured DHCP range to avoid conflicts.
  • No "block" reservation feature: TP-Link Deco systems don't currently have a feature to automatically reserve a sequential block of addresses simultaneously. You must individually reserve each IP address for a specific device.
  • MAC Address required: Address reservation relies on the device's unique MAC address, which you will need to input for each reservation.
  • Alternative for static IPs: If a device allows for manual configuration of a static IP address, you can assign it an IP address outside of the Deco's DHCP range to ensure it never changes, according to one TP-Link Community forum discussion. However, this method requires configuring the device itself rather than relying on the Deco's DHCP server.

Hi,

I did manage to reserve the address for my NAS using the process you show, but only after the firmware update. Reserving a block would have been nice, but I can live without it as long as I can individually reserve them as needed.

 

As to model/ hardware version, this is what's on the unit I've placed in my shop; should be the same as the main node since they both came in a set of three.

Yeah I was trying to see what speed Ethernet ports come with model so that's not the issue. 

 

So many months ago I was having speed tests of 100 Mbps using speed test but I pay for 500. Wasn't sure what the issue was so i did a little testing.

 

I unhooked all my deco's and switches and went old school and just ran an Ethernet cable from the back of the modem to my computer and got almost 500 Mbps so ruled out the modem 

 

Next I went modem to the top port on the deco then bottom port of the deco to the PC tested and got almost 500 Mbps then I switched the cables around and was still getting almost 500 Mbps

 

So I knew now it wasn't the modem or deco so i went from the bottom port of the deco to a switch tested all ports on the switch all getting around 500 Mbps

 

Which left the Ethernet ports in my walls 

 

Turns out one of the ports in my wall is bad - When I stopped using that port i got all my speed back 

 

Not saying this is your issue but it's something you can try to see if its the deco or something else

In my installation, the (admittedly long) ethernet cable goes directly from the primary node's jack to my 1st switch (no interim wall jacks). But. In testing, I tried two different cables (both known-good), and moved the cable from the switch to the ethernet port on one of the PCs to eliminate anything between the primary node and the wired destination. When I 1st got the router fully functional, I was seeing 600Mbit+ speed through the switch and into my rather old/tired PC (which does have a Gbit port). That was consistent with the old Google mesh system. But  an hour or two later, after getting the 2nd node operational and installed in my detached shop, I rechecked speed on the house computer and speed had dropped to 90Mb/s. That's when I went straight to a much newer PC in the same location, with nothing else in the wired network connected. Still ~90Mb/s, even with cable swaps, reboots, etc. I did try moving the source cable to the 2.5Gb port and tried both the 1Gb ports for the output cable, with no improvement.

 

As I mentioned, wifi speed is still quite good, so the primary node is getting proper speed. It's just the wired part of the network that's bonkers.

 

Next step (likely tomorrow) will be to do the tp-link - recommended node swap, to see if a different node as primary will eliminate the problem. 

If that doesn't help, (or if it does ;-) ), I suppose an RA will be in my future.

Wonder why connecting the 2nd unit is dropping the overall speed mmmm. In the deco app is the 2nd unit showing as connected via Ethernet? If so disconnect the Ethernet cord from the 2nd unit and let it connect wirelessly to the 1st unit then try the speed test again

Honestly, I doubt that it had any effect. I only mentioned it because it was in the sequence of events, and for 'full disclosure'. As I mentioned in my 2nd or 3rd post in the thread, my 1st attempt at installing the Deco resulted in the same 90Mb wired speed, without the 2nd node being installed. After I'd done a hard reset on the node and re-did the install, I temporarily saw the higher speed but it later dropped back to 90Mb/s.

 

BTW, I did check QoS (was off) and I turned off SIP ALG and UPnP, and rebooted the system, without any improvement.

 

edit: The 2nd node setup was done wirelessly, with it a few feet from the primary. It was then moved to my detached shop, which is fed via a MoCA adapter pair & RG6 coax (it's what I had run a couple of decades ago in the analog TV era); works more reliably than a long distance wireless bridge). With the old mesh system I'd see 800-900 Mb/s speed in the shop, on wired computers.

Well, no steps forward; two steps back.

Yesterday evening I followed the app's process to set up a different node as the 'main' node, hoping to determine whether the original had defective ethernet ports. The process claimed to complete, but then the app wouldn't connect to the Deco wifi. So I went ahead and cabled the 'new' main node to the fiber/ethernet converter, and I still couldn't get anything to work. Swapped the original 'main' back into the system, and *it* no longer works. 

 

This morning, I did a hardware reset on the new node, hoping to start 'clean'. I can't find any way to clear existing info in the app, so I deleted and re-installed the app on my phone. But after logging in to the app, it *still* has the old node info, and while it claims to connect to the new main node, I can't actually do anything beyond that.

 

And of course, since the Deco's internal web interface is effectively non-existent, there's no way to do any sort of troubleshooting, data clearing, etc.

 

I'm about to open a ticket with tp-link to see if they'll do anything to remedy the situation, but at this point I'm extremely pessimistic.

Yeah the way they tell people to switch out decos does'nt work IMO you will need to reset every deco  you own 

 

**Option #2**:

 

1. Reset all of your Deco units by pressing the reset button on each one. Then unplug all your decos expect for the unit you want as your main 

 

2. Using the Deco app, set up your newest Deco as the main unit. Since you have factory reset each unit, you will be able to use the same network SSID and password as before.

 

3. Once the newer model is operational, return to the app and add the remaining Decos to your network.

 

Try that and let me know
