Why Won’t TP-Link Enable Energy Monitoring via Matter?
I’m using the KP125M, which clearly supports energy monitoring in the Kasa app — but none of that data is available over Matter. It only exposes on/off control. This makes no sense.
-
Matter 1.3 supports energy reporting (W, kWh, etc.).
-
Home Assistant and other platforms support reading this data.
-
The hardware already collects it.
-
The only thing missing? TP-Link's firmware exposing the correct Matter clusters.
This isn't just the KP125M — other TP-Link plugs with energy monitoring also fail to report anything via Matter. That defeats the point of Matter: local control, no cloud reliance, and full device interoperability.
When will TP-Link release a firmware update to fix this?
Right now, you're holding your own hardware — and your users — back.

It should be coming. The devices themselves need to be updated to run version 1.3 so that they know how to communicate the data.
The teams have seen all the requests, and the 1.3 version of Matter is already being seen on Energy Monitoring compatible Smart Devices released earlier this year, such as the P316.
For devices released before the release of Energy Monitoring via Matter, the feature will be added via a firmware update, starting with the P110M. I have only been speaking with the teams for the last few days on the topic, so I am not sure where in development the features are - however, they are in the works.

@Riley_S What is the status on the KP125M being updated to Matter 1.3 for reporting energy monitoring? Looking to expand my inventory of KP125M smart plugs, but seeing how slow TP-Link has been to provide the necessary Matter firmware updates (especially since it was advertised as Matter compliant with energy reporting), we might need to look at other suppliers who adhere to the Matter standards.

@kray3 You may know this already, but I can tell you that I just purchased some KP125M smart plugs expressly for matter use and they still don't support power reporting over matter. I even added one to the Kasa and Tapo apps to see if there was new firmware, but it is up-to-date at v 1.2.5 build 241213. So it appears it has been a year since they last touched this firmware.

Just adding my 2 cents. I bought a 2 pack of these smart plugs specifically for the energy monitoring, hoping I could integrate the energy monitoring into some home automations. Boy was I wrong. Not only do these don't report energy monitoring to Matter, but the Kapa/Tapo app doesn't even allow any kind of energy monitoring type of automation.
My specific use case was to ensure an electric fireplace/space heater wasn't left on for safety reasons. I can see if uses X power while running and Y power when the cooling fan is running. I was hoping to use a few conditions related to other smart home devices in combination with how much energy is being used to automatically turn the plug off. Obviously, I don't want to turn it off if the cooling fan is running, which means it was turned off properly anyway. But if it's still running heat long after anyone has gone to bed, perhaps cutting power to conserve energy and reduce fire risk outweighs skipping the cooling phase.
