S505 Requires Hub for SmartThings Integration

Model: S505
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.2

Hi,

I have several Tapo S505 switches integrated into SmartThings, but one of them cannot be added. SmartThings reports that the switch requires a hub to connect...

One of the primary factors for me to choose Tapo was the lack of requirement for a hub.

Why can I connect 3 other switches (same model, hardware version, and same firmware version), but this one cannot connect?

Is there a quantity limitation to connect to SmartThings without a hub, do I need to group them somehow, do I have a faulty switch, or aomething else entirely?

Any advice or help is appreciated.

The switch that you can't add to SmartThings how did you try to set it up first?

  • Did you add it to the Tapo app first and then SmartThings?
  • DId you try to add it to SmartThings first?

Since you can't add it to smart things I would try removing it from the Tapo app first, Then set it up in the Tapo app. Once it's added to the Tapo go into SmartThings and click on Menu > Settings icon at the top right > Linked services > Tapo > Refresh

That should hopefully add it to the SmartThings app

Thanks for the reply. The system currently consists of (5) P210M outlets and (5) S505 switches (as well as other IoT devices). I added every Tapo device (one at a time, as each was installed and initially powered on) to the Tapo app. and then just updated the linked service in SmartThings to pull in the added devices to the SmartThings service.

I also tried removing from the system in the Tapo app. and defaulting the S505 which was not visible in SmartThings (as you suggested), but that did not help.

What I have found since my original post is that if I remove all of the S505s from the system and add them back, one at a time and in a different order than before, I can only ever see the first (3) S505s which were added to the Tapo service from the linked service in SmartThings. Only (3) every time - it doesn't matter which (3), but that is the limit.

So, I don't know if this is a SmartThings limitation, a no Tapo hub limitation, a protocol limitation, or something else entirely, but I am now very confident that it is a design limitation and not that I have a faulty S505.

For the record - all of the P210Ms were added to SmartThings without issue. Flawless installations and very easy to integrate into SmartThings.

So, I'm content for now. I have found a way to use the last two S505s in the Tapo system in a way that does not require SmartThings.

I do wish that this limitation was published (and easily searchable) instead of requiring me to do extensive troubleshooting; but I've experienced worse systems.

Maybe at some point I'll break down and add another hub to the larger system to see if that helps, but that is a major turn-off if that's the case for making more than (3) S505s visible in SmartThings. Perhaps I have higher expectations than I should, but it just seems like I shouldn't need multiple hubs in a system that uses diverse IoT manufacturers who all employ the same protocols and who all adhere to the same Matter standards. Again - that's one of the major reasons I went with Tapo - so I wouldn't need yet another hub in the overall system.

Thanks again!

I know when I add devices into SmartThings they always show up under the Devices menu in a room called "No room assigned" maybe they are showing there? I have a total of 17 Kasa switches in my Tapo app and they all show up in SmartThings so I'm leaning toward it being a problem with Tapo switches you have.

Yeah - I've noticed that. I always rename the devices and assign a new room when I add them. Unfortunately, I don't see them there either.

I'll give Kasa a look. Thanks again!

Going to get your logs as well and tag one of the members of the tp-link staff to see whats going on. What type of cell phone do you use?

Thanks! You might be onto something there... I'm using the Tapo and SmartThings app's on an iPhone (iOS 26.1).
