Smart plugs not working with Alexa routines

Hi
My smart plugs are working fine with Alexa if I use voice control or the alexa app control buttons.
They just won't work as part of the routines e.g. 'Start my day' - Turn kettle plug on . Turn lights on etc.
Any thoughts anyone?
