If there are no firmware differences between the regions, then why does the US page list completely different versions for 1.2.x than the EU page?

US:

  • 1.1.8 (published 2023-04-07)
  • 1.2.2 (published 2023-05-12)
  • 1.2.3 (published 2023-06-16)

EU:

  • 1.1.8 (published 2023-04-11)
  • 1.2.0 (published 2023-06-08, but with the same release notes as US version 1.2.2)

Why is version 1.2.0 not even listed for the US and why was it published in the EU one month after 1.2.2 was already released in the US?

Something doesn't add up.

Every local website may choose to publish specific versions if necessary. The reason why the US website doesn't publish the 1.2.0 version could be that the 1.2.0 version is basically much the same as the 1.2.2 version, so they choose to not publish that version.

Are you saying you can see the new 1.2.3 version for the satellite AX55 on the main AX55's web interface, but failed to upgrade the firmware?

Yes, I tried it multiple times. It only says "Downloading" with the spinning indicator (no progress bar). Sometimes it would just spin forever and sometimes it failed with a generic error message like "Unable to download ...".

The update from 1.1.8 to 1.2.0 earlier worked without issues.

> Please try rebooting both of them then try to upgrade the satellite again.

I already did that before (multiple times) and it did not help. Now I'm a bit hesitant to try it again considering all the problems with that version.

BTW, are they both V1 versions?

Yes, both are V1. I bought them at the same time so I expect that they are pretty much identical.

I cannot trace out why this firmware update for the satellite router fails at the moment. We can ask engineering to help investigate it further if you're willing to troubleshoot.

If you don't want to work with the engineers this time and just want to make the firmware upgrade work this time, you can reset the satellite router to factory defaults, then login to its wen GUI to upgrade the firmware first, then connect it back to the main AX55 via EasyMesh again.

@Kevin_Z I'm happy to work with the engineers to find the issue, just let me know what to do.

  @Kevin_Z

Tether access eventually sorted itself, but it took a few hours.

Another issue we have discovered though, is that the signal strength has dropped. Before the firmware update, there were no Wi-Fi dead-zones. Now, there are a few, resulting in a number of our Smart Plugs and sensors being disconnected from the network.

And before anyone asks, yes we did try rebooting all the devices, and even tried removing and re-adding via their respective apps.

To combat this, we have had to move our RE330 range extender from our kitchen (used for extending the network through to our back garden) to our hallway, just to allow Smart Devices in 2 bedrooms (Bedroom 1 and 2 on the map) to connect to the network.

And for the other bedroom (Bedroom 3 on the map), we have installed on our main PC (connected via Ethernet), a PCIe Wi-Fi 6 Dual Band card (with 9dBi antennas) and created a hotspot for the Smart devices.

Another issue with the new firmware, is wrong icons showing for connected devices showing in the web interface.

As you can see in the following pictures, I have set appropriate icons in the Tether App, but the web interface is showing completely different icons.

Correct from Tether:

Incorrect from Web Interface 2.4G:

5G:

Wired:

As we can't change icons via the Web Interface, this could be a problem for someone using said interface to check connected clients.

Kevin: Are the smart plugs and sensors connected to the AX55 2.4G network or they are connected to the RE330 extended network? If they are connected to the AX55 2.4G network directly and drop the connection, please try to modify the 2.4G wireless settings on the AX55, such as choosing a clearer channel, changing the channel width to 40MHz, and making sure the Transmit Power is High.

Regarding the devices icons displayed differently on the Tether App and on the WEB, we will report it to the engineers and ask them to confirm it. Thank you very much for the feedback.

Before the update, all the Smart devices connected to the AX55.

Although the Smart devices in all 3 Bedrooms were showing weak signals, they were still connected, and the signal strength did not prevent them from working as they should, as they do not require much bandwidth.

It was only after the update that the Smart devices in the 3 bedrooms refused to connect to the AX55. The devices in the Living Room remained connected.

When this happened, as part of trying to get them to connect to the AX55, we also tried the "Network Performance Optimization" function within the Tether App (once we were able to access it) and got a "Perfect" result.

Wi-Fi Analyzer App also showed no congestion on our Wi-Fi bands, hence our conclusion that Wi-Fi strength dropped with this update, and our only solution was to move the RE330 for the Smart devices in Bedrooms 1 and 2.

Due to building materials and power socket placements, it is not possible to extend for all Bedrooms with the RE330, hence needing to set up an Ethernet connected PC Hotspot in Bedroom 3.

Thank you very much once again for all the detailed information.

Do you want to investigate this issue further? If yes, we would like to escalate the case to our support engineers to analyze it further. Otherwise, we would pay attention to similar feedback and ask the engineering team to make further tests in the lab to confirm if there is an issue with the 2.4G signal changes.

  @Kevin_Z

I just wish we could roll back to our previous firmware (1.1.8), but the update to 1.2.3 makes it impossible. We could have then recorded the signal strength of both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands to compare between the different firmware versions.

Especially now that some 5GHz capable devices seem to be switching to 2.4GHz in areas they previously connected on 5GHz. This seems to indicate that both bands may have dropped in strength.

The irony is, in some places where the 2.4GHz band is not available, the 5GHz band is surprise

At the moment, using the RE330 and a PC Wi-Fi hotspot, we are able to keep all devices connected, so I am happy to not escalate further on this occasion, though feedback should be sent to the engineers to keep an eye on signal strengths with firmware updates, as even a 1% drop in signal strength can impact some users.

We had always planned to add EasyMesh routers as satellites to Bedrooms 1 and 3 to avoid issues like this, but due to the building materials used in our property, along with placements of plug sockets, we really need Ethernet Backhaul to be implemented on the AX55. Fingers crossed, it won't be much longer.
