Troubleshooting Tapo D210/TD21 Won't Wake Up Unless Watching Liveview in the Tapo App
This Article Applies To
Tapo D210(US/EU/JP/KP) V1.0
TD21(US/UK) V1.0
Description
Recently, you might have noticed that the Tapo D210 V1 or TD21 V1 doorbell has stopped detecting motion or recording events, except when you are watching the live stream in the Tapo app, where detection and recording work normally.
Troubleshooting Guide
Set the doorbell's detection sensitivity to the maximum level, then run the detection-range test on your doorbell. *We recommend conducting multiple tests to avoid coincidental or inconsistent results. How to test the detection range of Tapo battery camera
If the doorbell cannot detect anything during testing, or if the detection range is noticeably limited—for example, within just 1–2 meters, the issue is likely hardware‑related, specifically with the PIR sensor. In this case, a replacement will be needed. To proceed with the warranty, please contact the retailer or local TP-Link support. Contact Technical Support
For other cases, please contact technical support for further investigation.

@Wayne-TP Thanks for that Wayne!
Unfortunately, the beta firmware hasn't changed anything :(
I Still only get motion alerts when the app is open and I'm viewing the live feed. I've followed various guides; motion and person detection turned on, sensitivity turned all the way up etc. Like others, it seems the issue is the device isn't auto waking up to detect the event.
Any other advice?
Thanks in advance

@lybjsksbjs @SPH501 Beta firmware has been sent to your device, you may check it 30 minutes later in the Tapo app and perform the update.

@Wayne-TP The firmware has updated but it still does not detect. I have set the sensitivity to maximum and set the performance to High. I have run the detection range test which works perfectly, but it would because the app is open. When the app is closed the device does not trigger at all, yet it used to work fine several weeks ago. Clearly the PIR is working as it should because the device detects when the app is open. It appears to me (as an electronics and software engineer) that the device is sleeping and not being triggered by the PIR when an event is detected.
I cant believe that all the devices in this forum have a hardware fault. It has to be something else.

@SPH501 I agree with you, this does not seem to be a hardware fault. Mine also stopped working randomly around a few weeks back and it appears it's the same with others on this thread. I'm assuming there was an auto firmware update a few back and this has caused the issue. It make sense it's the firmware because why else would Wayne be sending out beta versions.
I'm surprised this hasn't affected more people though!
