Model: Archer VR2800
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I have just replaced my BT HH6 with a TP Archer VR2800 due to the usual disconnect nonsense you get with BT gear.

Having gone through the setup process I am now successfully connected to the internet but only on Wifi.

I have an ethernet installed throughout the house, and I have tried connecting the VR2800 to the switch using both Lan 1 and Lan 4, powercycling everything after each change but it will not register on the switch and thus everything connected to the Switch is not networked or have internet access.

I also tried plugging a windows laptop directly into the switch, no connection, into the VR2800, connected, into the ethernet cable that is plugged into the switch, also provides internet access. So the issue is that the switch and VR2800 are not talking.

I'm not sure what I have done wrong but this did not need any configuration changes on a HH6.

The only thing that I can think of is when I was setting up through the VR2800 interface I did it with my chromebook and at one point it asked if I had connected through wireless or ethernet, I chose wireless. This option does not come up again if I repeat the setup.

Any help would be appreciated as I am now stuck and will probably have to plug the HH back in.

Thank You

OK Solved!!

Firstly talking to a local networking company they suggested I should be using port 16 of my GS116 Netgear router, this is the one intended to be connected to the router.  I was using port 1, which was working ok with my BT Home Hub.

With the new TP router plugged into port 16 there was no activity LED on the switch, which meant it wasnt connected correctly, seeing as this cable was fine in port 1 with the old router I concluded that perhaps a crossover cable was needed.  This shouldnt be needed as a GS116 automatically accounts for this, but perhaps the new TP Link router could not...seems unlikely but worth a shot.

I was correct, new crossover cable from Port 1 of the TP Link AC2800 VDSL Modem / Router to the GS116 Netgear Port 16 and Et Voila, Ethernet comes to life.

Should have tried that ages ago!  Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

Thanks to all who provided feedback.

I reconnected the ISP's modem/router and ethernet network has reconnected. I did establish with a laptop networked directly to the switch I could ping the new modem router, but not from any other PC on the network which is strange because they are effectively connected in exactly the same way. So nothing wrong with the network connections or hardware

@TK421

Hello, thanks for your updates.

From your description, the internet works with pc connected to the Archer VR2800 directly but no internet from the switch, I suspect the switch is the root cause. We can do some troubleshooting  to locate the issue and fix it.

1. Please ensure that there is no IP conflict; The LAN IP of Archer VR2800 is 192.168.1.1 by default.

2. With PC connected to the switch, switch connected  to the VR2800 directly, please click here to verify the IP and gateway of your PC;

Note: Please show us a screenshot of this page.

3. Please tell us the model number of the switch.

Besides, you can give a call to the tech support of the switch to get some suggestion.

May it help and have a good day.

@Kevin_Z

Thanks for the reply, I havent had a chance to try out your suggestion but the IT guys at work came to a similar conclusion.

They reckon the Netgear switch and the new modem/router have the same IP addresses, ie ending 1.1, whereas the old modem/router ends 1.254.

I'm hoping I can just change the new modem/router default gateway to 1.254 to get it all working again.

The other thought was something else on the network assigning dhcp addresses, like the NAS I have attached, but I checked the settings and DHCP server is switched off.

I'll report back when I can get the kids of youtube for 5 mins....

@TK421

Thanks for your reply; please take your time to test it.

Regarding how to change default LAN IP address, you can login to the web UI of the Archer VR2800 and go to advanced-network-LAN page to change it.

How to access the web interface: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1730/

Any updates, please let us know.

Good day.

@Kevin_Z

Got a few minutes to retry the new modem.

I changed the default gateway ip to 192.168.1.254, rebooted everything in modem/router, switch, pc order.

No network addresses on the ethernet

i change the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 as the pc I had plugged into the switch was showing a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 for the ethernet adapter.

No network addresses on the ethernet.

So still stuck.

With a laptop plugged directly into the switch, wifi turned off, I cannot connect to the router/modem at 192.168.1.254

I also switch off the NAS before all of these steps in case that was doing something, although I had checked DHCP server was switched off in the settings.

Here is the ipconfig /all with the laptop plugged into the switch and wifi on, you can see no default gateway on the ethernet adapter.

Re:AC2800 - Configure ethernet connection to switch

Further Testing I disconnected everything at the patch panel, leaving only a laptop patched directly into the switch which is connected to the modem/router. Turned off wifi on laptop Switched off switch Rebooted modem/router, waited for connectivity lights Switched on switch Checked for network connectivity on laptop. Still no default gateway. If I use tracert back to the ip of the router it does find it. Should i have a crossover cable with the VR2800, I didnt need one with the BT Homehub? Any advice anyone?

Re:AC2800 - Configure ethernet connection to switch

I have tried the following configuration to further isolate the problem.

I conntected just the modem/router, a different switch (gs105) and a laptop, using all the same cables.

The modem / router gives the laptop a ip address....so why the hell doesnt it with my orginal switch?

This at least proves there is no problem with the modem / router.

Still confused why using two different unmanaged switches (GS116 vs GS105) would give different results with different router/ modems.

If anyone has any ideas please help!  I'm not convinced replacing my GS116 will achieve anything
