Model: Archer VR1600v
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I help out at a not for profit, self help group who have just been upgraded from ADSL to FTTB with a new Archer VR1600v modem.

They/we have 10 computers and one e-Studio shared printer.

Previously the computers and printer connected to a DGS-1016A desktop switch, which was connected to the WAN port of the old modem and all computers could see each other as well as the shared printer and a few locally shared printers.

We connected this switch into the WAN port on the new modem but cannot see any of the devices on the network.

When a computer is disconnected from the switch and plugged directly into one of the yellow LAN ports, they can bee seen be the other computers plugged directly into the new Modem/Router.

We only use Ethernet cables for connections.

Is there anything I can do to make the devices connected to the switch, be visible by other devices connected to the switch?

Do I need to buy another switch to connect to the Archer VR1600v modem?

If I need to buy another switch, I'd prefer an unmanaged one so that there is one less "thing" to manage.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Zinger

@zingerina

Hello, thank you for asking.

Can you please verify the network layout again? Is it like below:

Layout 1: FTTB modem---DGS-1016A switch---(WAN) VR1600v?

And the VR1600v is working as a wireless router? If this is the case, the devices connected to the VR1600v cannot talk with the devices connected to the switch directly.

It is suggested to connect them as below, this will allow all the devices in the network to talk to each other:

Layout 2: FTTB modem---(WAN) VR1600v---DGS-1016A switch

If the above is not accepted due to the device's locations, you may try to switch the VR1600v into an Access Point to give it a go in Layout 1:

I hope this helps.
