TP-Link pushed updated Deco app, which has new function Deco Lab. Under it, there is a feature Wi-Fi Assistant. It has a set of neat features for WiFi diagnostics, but is not bug free.

I have found two bugs in about 20 minutes of playing with it.

1. WiFi Interference Test does not update interference description.

As a result, you might get all green Low interference with wrong description:

2. WiFi diagnostics incorrectly report upload speed in speed test.

It gives me the number which is quite higher than actual. My ISP Internet upload speed is 20Mbps, and even when ISP generously allows more, it is never over 25Mbps. Speedtest under WiFi diagnostics reports 100Mpbs-160Mpbs. I wish.

I suspect speedtest incorrectly keeps averaging download with upload speeds, while it runs upload speed test. That will only be noticeable on very asymmetrical ISP Internet connections, such as mine: 300Mbps download, 20Mbps upload.

These are my true download and upload speeds, from More/Test Internet Speed:

Regardless, WiFi Assistant is nice addition to the Deco smartphone app.

Besides the fact that freezes the app, and phone, for 30 seconds or so within the tests, I thought the phone was just going to reboot itself!

@TP-Link

Found two more bugs.

3. WiFi diagnostics incorrectly reports high latency in ping to Google.com.

This is ping value that I am geting when running WiFi Diagnostics:

This is more realistic ping value from running standalone Ping Test from the WiFi Assistant:

If I to guess, WiFi Diagnostics may be pinging local IP in Asia, while my smartphone is in North America. Ping Test correctly pings NA Google server.

4. Internet speed summary does not consider latency.

Under Internet Speed summary it says:

This summary appears in app before ping results are reported.

While my ISP speed is indeed high enough for streaming 4K content, app should consider latency before promising "smooth online gaming." Not with that latency, if it were true latency.

This is what gaming pros are saying:

"Dedicated online gamers prefer their network connection to run with less than 50 ms of latency and quickly notice any lag above that level. In general, online applications perform best when network latency stays below 100 ms; any additional lag is noticeable to users."
