Hi all,

Been having this problem for several months, the internet constantly drops after DNS timeouts for either www.msftncsi.com or dns.msftncsi.com

as shown in the log below:

2021-06-20 20:12:36 [6] Httpd: DNS 1.1.1.1 resolve timeout for dns.msftncsi.com

2021-06-20 20:23:21 [5] DHCPD: Send ACK to 192.168.1.5

ISP is EE, on an ADSL+ Line.

The DSL DNS is set to 1.1.1.1 or 1.0.0.1 and the local DNS either uses a local PiHole server or the 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 DNS servers, depending on if the connection has crashed. So not sure where the 8.8.8.8 DNS requests are coming from.

It's a nightmare and I can't keep having these internet drop outs, so I'm going to have to replace the router with another model from a different brand.

Here's a section of log from DSL Connection:

@X3non  Hello,

Thank you for your detailed post.

It is recommended to use 8.8.8.8 as WAN DNS / DSL DNS and see if that helps.  (Advanced--Status--Internet - modify DNS settings)

If the issue happens again, can you help confirm some details to help locate the problem

>Does all the devices lost Internet when issue happens and what are they?  How do you recover the connection, like reboot the modem?

> How often does this happen, is there any large traffic activities like file downloading or

> Can you share with us a screenshot of the Status page  including the synchronization rate when issue occurs,  please save the whole system log and send to us, thank you

> When did you buy this modem and when did the issue starts.

@TP-Link

Hi, Thanks for the quick response.

I've attached the log and screenshot of when it crashes on 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 below in a .zip file.

In answer to your questions,

All devices lose internet when it happens, with mobile the devices simply spin endlessly/fail to load, or the devices report that the network has no internet access and revert to mobile data connections.

As for laptops/desktops, the error "Page failed to load" is given, often with the error "DNS Fail" but always corresponding with the router log showing a contact to either www.msftncsi.com or dns.msftncsi.com

A lot of the time the dns resolutions for the above addresses will show as succeeded in the logg as you'll see, but something about it trying to contact on 8.8.8.8 sometimes just crashes everything.

The connection can only be restored with one or 2 reboots of the router, and then sometimes it requires that the DSL connection be disconnected, the WAN DNS edited to 0.0.0.0 and then changed back before reconnecting the DSL in the console.

Often it happens at random times, consistently at around 1:50 am however. As far as I'm aware there are no large downloads present, the traffic monitor in the router doesn't report anything out of the ordinary, and no other issues seem to arise. It can often be noticed as my Sonos speakers stop playing music, crash and announce that they cannot reach Spotify, my music provider. After the router reboot the speakers will then be perfectly fine, until the next msftncsi request when they'll crash again.

I bought this modem to replace a TP-Link AC2100/VR600 which I had up until February of this year. That device had compatability issues with other network equipment I use to supply wired ethernet around my home, and had no wireless issues, only LAN connection issues.

Hope this helps you diagnose my problem!

@MCrouch

Not as of yet, I have a TP link engineer looking into it, But I think these products are just sh*t and not compatible with the broadband.
