Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V7
Firmware Version: 1.1.3 Build 20211103

So I have a Tp-Link Deco X20 mesh WiFi router. Since it only has two Ethernet ports, so I bought a switch to support more wired connections. The switch I bought was Tp-Link TL-SG105, which is an unmanaged switch.

After the setup, now I have this connection order:

Modem -> Router -> Switch -> PC1, PC2, PC3...

But the problem I have is, when connecting to the switch, my PC can't obtain IP address. It seems like the DHCP on the router is not working at all. I'm getting "Unidentified network" with a 169.*.*.* IP address

.

My other iMac also cannot obtain IP when connecting to the switch.

When connecting the PC directly to the router, it works fine.

What could be the most possible cause of it? Is the switch malfunctioning? Or the Deco x20 needs some extra configuration in order to support an unmanaged switch?

Please help!

@JimmyDai

Hi, Thank you very much for your feedback.

Based on the current connection map:

Modem -> Router -> Switch -> PC1, PC2, PC3...

Were you trying to say, PCs failed to get the IP address behind the switch but if any of them connected to the main Deco X20 directly, the IP is ok and the internet works fine?

If yes, any chance that you could move the switch  behind any of the satellite Deco X20 and check whether the same issue still existed, like:

Modem -> Router ~~~~<Wi-Fi>----satellite Deco X20----- Switch -> PC1, PC2, PC3

 And have you enabled IPTV/VLAN under Deco APP>More>Advanced>IPTV/VLAN?

@TP-Link Yes that is exactly what happened to me.

I have tried to move the switch behind one of the satellite Deco X20. And it worked! My laptop was able to get IP address when connecting to the moved switch.

And nope, I have not enabled IPTV/VLAN.

What do all these mean? Is the main Deco X20 malfunctioning?

Should I enable the IPTV/VLAN and try the switch behind the main Deco again?

@JimmyDai

Hi, thank you for getting back to me.

It seems like something is wrong with the main Deco.

Could you please send me a private message about your TP-Link email ID and the MAC address of your main Deco?

By the way, who is your internet service provider? And what is the model number of your ISP cable modem?

Please also see the private message for further assistance.

Thank you again.

Ok, the problem is now resolved after I switch the main deco with one satellite deco. The old main deco must be malfunctioning. And I also sent you a message about the remote session. Thank you so much!

Update:

Another problem occurred after that. My PC was only getting 100 Mbps speed from the switch. I tried changing the ports connected, and disable & enable the ethernet adapter. It sometimes even dropped to 10 Mbps. About 10 minutes after that, my PC stopped getting IP again. And the LED light near the port on the switch was off.

I'm gonna return this switch and end my nightmare for all. No more ethernet connection. Just Wi-Fi for all devices.

@JimmyDai

Hi, thank you very much for getting back to me.

And I got your message as well.

Currently, it is more like TL-SG105 is malfunctioning.

Later you could monitor the performance of the Deco kit for a while or test with another switch if possible, we would be happy to help you replace the Deco if necessary.

Thank you again for your time and patience.
