Model: TL-WR902AC
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 0.9.1 0.4 v0089.0 Build 220329 Rel.61109n(4555)

Hi All,

I want to set my TL router up in client mode to allow a small cluster of Raspberry Pi's to access the internet.  When I set up my network  as a 10.42.42.0  and connect the home router via WIFI (home network router is 192.168.1.254) the Pi's cannot see the internet...or at least ipv4 addresses do not seem to work.  But if I set my TL router to use addresses in the same range (eg give the TL router an address of 192.168.1.1) then it all works fine.  The pi's get their addresses from the TL router DHCP service.  I would like to keep my Pi network separate from the home network apart from the ability to route to internet but it does not seem to be possible.  Could it be something to with the way I am setting up gateway or DNS attributes on the DHCP service? I have seen a few other similar threads but nothing seems to help.  Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks :-)

Basically you want to use a router which connects wirelessly to your main router but by wire to the RPi cluster, while keep these in different subnets, right ?

Have you tried the Hotspot Mode (WISP Mode) of your TL-WR902AC:

or in TL-WR844N/TL-WR820N user guide is described like this:

Here's a guide on how to configure TL-WR902AC in Hotspot (WISP) mode. Give it a try and check if that suit your needs.

When used in client mode TL-WR902AC should have a LAN IP address in the same subnet as your main router already has - that's by design.

If you need to put your Pi cluster in a different subnet that your main router's one, you would need another device (not TL-WR902AC) in router mode to do so.

Thanks! I wasted quite a few hours banging my head against that particular brick wall :-). Do any of the nano routers support this feature?

Yes, TL-WR710N, but its latest FW release is from 2015 and it's not worth it to use in a contemporary scenario.

Buy yourself a decent router (for ex. Archer C64 or Archer AX53) depending on your needs or budget and it will do the job for you.

Thanks again! The form factor is important - I am building a pi cluster and room in the case is limited :-). Would the AC750 or N300 solve my problem?
