Model: RE305
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 1.0.23 Build 230418 Rel.60395n

Hi,

my setup is RE305 v4 on firmware 1.0.23 Build 230418 Rel.60395n and Archer AX55 on firmware 1.2.3 Build 20230603 rel.46473 so both have the newest available.

The router is in one room whereas the extender is in the other (abot 10 meters away) separated by a closet, brick wall and drywall. The signal diode on the extender is solid blue. When I move between the rooms with my tablet or phone it doesn't switch between router and extender. And I'm not talking about quickly moving between rooms but walking into the room and standing right next to the extender or router for several minutes. It's not so obvious with OneMesh because the network name is the same but I test it by refreshing the client list in the tether app. We can exclude the scenario when the signal from the device farther away is strong enough so it doesn't switch to the closer one because I've measured it and the signal strength form router drops from around -35dBm to -67dBm in the other room. The same applies if I'm connected to the extender and walk into the router room. So the difference is huge and the TP-Link software should switch to the closer, stronger signal.

However if I turn off/on wifi on tablet or phone then it does connect to the closest signal source. Of course this is not how it's supposed to be.

Additional info:

Besides OneMesh I have also enabled Smart Connect option.

Security is WPA2-PSK

The RE305 is in the Extender Mode

Please advise.

Regards

David

Hi, Thank you very much for the feedback.

May I know the model number of the tablet and smartphone?

Have you experienced a similar issue on other mobile devices?

Have you checked the internet speed when the mobile device switches to RE315? and the speed when it sticks to Archer AX55 even though next to RE315?

Wait for your reply and best regards.

Hi David,

the devices are: Galaxy Tab S6 (Android 12) and the phone is iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 17.1). Also tested on iPhone 11 Pro (iOS 17.1).

Thank you for mentoining the speeds. My max internet speed (provider cap) is 600 mbps down / 150 up and I get that when in the router room but when in the RE305 room I only get about 200 down and 150 up using Speedtest by Ookla. These speeds are consistent every time for each room - tested many times. So it seems that maybe it does switch between the router and extender but why so low speed on the extender? I even turned off  Smart Connect and left just the 5 GHz band on but no change. Also when I start testing in the RE305 room I can see the phone on the client list for the RE305 but when I go to the router room I instantly get  600 mbps even though still listed on the RE305 clients list. Even after several minutes in the router room and refreshing the list several times I'm still on the RE305 list . So maybe the switching works correctly but the clients list is not refreshed correctly?

BTW I'm running Tether v 4.3.9 (Build409)

Hi, Thanks for the update.

We might need to start with their maximum link speed.

For Archer AX55, it is AX3000:5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (802.11ax, 160mhz)+2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps (802.11ax). And RE305 is AC1200867Mbps at 5GHz,300Mbps at 2.4GHz. The Wi-Fi specification of RE305 is much lower than AX55.

The main purpose of OneMesh and EasyMesh is to reduce the roaming/switching time from one network to another, expanding the WiFi coverage instead of boosting the speed.

Due to the half-duplex communication of the range extenders(allows signals to be transmitted in two directions, but only allows signals to be transmitted in one direction on one channel at a time), the speed would be reduced from one hop(Host router) to the next(the extender).

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi David,

I also tried RE700X to match AX55's specs and indeed the down speed increased form 200 (RE305) to almost 300. On the AX55 I still get max ISP speed which is 600.

So I'm getting half of that on RE700X. I thought that now that I have 2 (well 3 including iPhone 15 pro) WI-FI 6 AX devices I should be getting full-duplex and close to max speed on the RE700X. Why isn't that so?

Regards

David
