I've bought a PA717 Kit. I connected them no problem. When I was pairing, I realised my husband had a WPA version (model unknown without disconnecting I think but it has paired to the Utility app) plugged in directly beside the router and connected via ethernet also. I had a problem and TP-Link sorted it (power saving mode).

Anyway the problem I have now is that my router was only providing 1 bar on WiFi, with the powerline adapters (1 located 10ft from the router and 2nd located 10ft from the first, I am trying to access Internet 6ft from the 2nd PA) I was getting 2 bars (well initially it went full but has decreased to 2) but if I connect to the WPA via WiFi I get 3 bars.

Can someone explain to me how I can get better connection on the extender than the actual router for WiFi, when they are right beside each other? Is it because it is an extender/booster or is there something else? Our router is the best they offer.

Also: the 1st PA is showing 3 lights, including ethernet but it isn't connected via ethernet. The 2nd PA is only showing 2 lights which I assume is correct. Of course WPA version has all lights on which is correct. Why is this? Any logical reason for it? Should I swap the PA'S around to see if it increases my signal, should I remove the 1st one to try to increase?

Sorry, I'm technical to a degree but this is way beyond my skill set.

Hi,

Could you please confirm the exact model numbers of all your Powerline adapters?

The way I understand it at the moment is that you have a "TL-PA717 Kit" and another TL-WPAxxxx Powerline adapter.

A "TL-PA717 Kit" consists of two "TL-PA717" adapters, which have no Wi-Fi at all and therefore their placement will not affect how many "bars" of Wi-Fi signal you get.
And because of the above the two TL-PA717 Powerline adapters will only be of any use when both are connected via Ethernet.

However, it is certainly abnormal that the "Ethernet" light is ON when there is no Ethernet connected to it.

Why the TL-WPAxxxx adapter provides better signal than your Wi-Fi router I don't know.
Many Wi-Fi routers allow for adjustment of the strength of the Wi-Fi signal via their configuration GUI. You could check whether maybe someone adjusted it to the lowest setting?
