Model: Deco X50
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.6.7

I am having difficulty setting up some new X50s. I bought the to replace a very old and failing mesh system. As I recall, I plugged in the old system, followed the instructions and it just worked. With the X50s that is not the case. My best guess is something is going wrong with DHCP. I run my own DHCP server, which has had no problems for years, but could have some minore misconfiguration.

When I have tried putting a single X50 into Access Point mode, it all works OK, except for all Android devices, which fail to obtain an IP addess. I have to assign them a static IP and then they work fine.

I have also tried in Router mode. In this case connecting is fine, even with my Android phone, but the X50 cannot make an outbound connection. Connecting to its web interface, I see the WAN port has no IP address. I connected my laptop and ran up wireshark and found the X50 is initiating a DHCP conversation with my server. I see Discover -> Offer -> Request -> ACK. This looks good, as the packets include the allocated IP, DNS servers, gateways etc. Unfortunately, this conversation repeats.

Any guesses what is wrong? Where else can I look for clues?

Is your Deco X50 connecting to the ONT or an ONR? Kindly try to power off the modem(ONT/ONR) first, and also the Deco X50 as well for at least 5 minutes to clean the caches. Set only AP mode if your Deco is connecting to ONR to avoid double NAT, or else set it as router mode.

  @DD123

Hi, welcome to the community.

Can I have a simple network layout that how the locally hosted DHCP server and Deco are connected to your network?

Did you run any third-party DHCP server software on a Windows laptop, such as pfSense/RouterOS?

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Hi, I thought my original post might be a bit long, so I probably missed out lots of useful information. Here is some more.

My existing network is about 20 years old, with little changed, although most of the components have been replaced a few times. It is fairly simple:

INTERNET => [modem/router/firewall] => DMZ => [firewall] => LAN

The DMZ used to hold an externally facing web server, but that is now hosted outside, however it does has some IoT devices I don't want/need on the LAN. The [modem/router/firewall] box provides DHCP etc services to the DMZ.

On the LAN there is a Windows DHCP server, DNS etc (along with quite a few other things).

The old MESH AP (to be replaced) and the new X50 are on the LAN through a switch.

I planned to run the X50s in AP mode, but since router mode was the default, I thought I would try that too.

Currently testing is a bit harder as my ISP has a fault and I cannot connect anyway, but I saw the issues I described before that happened! But I would hope the Deco would be able to connect to my LAN without the presence of the internet
