Model: RE700X
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.2.0 Build 20250808 Rel. 36206

Hi all,

I'm currently having some issues with the following hardware chain:

Archer GX90 (HW Rev 1.0, FW 1.2.3 Build 20250603 rel.66228(4555) > TL-SG105RE700X (HW Rev 2.0, FW 1.2.0 Build 20250808 Rel. 36206)

Since the update enabling Ethernet backhaul landed for the RE700X I thought it would be better to stop sapping wireless bandwidth unnecessarily. The GX90 is located at the front of the house, with the switch at the rear via a single cable. The switch has a Mac Mini used as a TM backup destination and a workstation also attached. The plan was to attach the RE700X since it's located nearby and give a proper connection at the rear of the house and garden.

I found however connecting via Ethernet actually made things worse.

  • The GX90 showed it as a wired device but it would disconnect and reconnect every minute or so.
  • Wireless devices such as security cameras and my phone showed as wired devices.
  • On the OneMesh settings on both devices it still showed as wirelessly connected, though signal strength was gone on the GX90.
  • The Mac Mini on the same switch could not use the internet wired. It showed the GX90 IP and that everything was fine, but no actual connection was possible.
  • The GX90 also showed the Mac Mini as wired but it too would disconnect and reconnect every minute or so.
  • The Tether app showed the RE700X as connected, then no internet connection, then connected, mirroring the disconnect pattern.

I would like to query if this is a known issue with certain or all switches, if a managed switch would solve the problem (easy swap over, if caused by loops or such) OR if I need to wait for a firmware update to fix.

I've put the RE700X back as a One/EasyMesh relay unit fow now.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

I’ve got a similar setup here with two RE700X (V2) units - one of them connected via Ethernet backhaul to my main router (Archer GE800), both running the same 1.2.0 Build 20250808 firmware - and I can confirm it works perfectly stable on this model combination. In your case, the problem isn’t the RE700X or the switch - it’s that the GX90 still runs on OneMesh, which doesn’t support Ethernet backhaul. That’s why you’re seeing all the odd behaviour like wired devices being detected as wireless and the constant reconnects. The RE700X is trying to negotiate EasyMesh over Ethernet, but the GX90 only “understands” OneMesh via Wi-Fi, so they end up looping each other. Once the GX90 gets a firmware that adds full EasyMesh (not OneMesh) support, the Ethernet backhaul should work exactly as you’d expect - just like it does with newer routers such as the GE800 or the BE-series models. For now, your best option is exactly what you’ve done - keep it on a wireless OneMesh connection until the GX90 firmware update arrives

Hi,

I am afraid the Archer GX90 does not support EasyMesh via Ethernet backhaul, as otherwise it would be listed in the first post of this https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/593722 thread.

And OneMesh never supported connection via Ethernet backhaul either.

Thank you for clarifying, I was under the impression Easy/OneMesh were one and the same. Apologies.

I can see the GX90 has a planned firmware update to support EasyMesh though this is not guaranteed. I'll see if an update materialises in future or look into alternative hardware after a period.

  @Vendex

Thank you for confirming it works on supported EasyMesh devices! I'll hold out for now and see if an update lands. Hoping since the RE700X was updated so long after release that the GX90 will follow suit, only being one year older.
