Model: Archer BE230
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.1 Build 20250804 rel.79639(4555)

Hello everyone / TP-Link support,

1st of all, thank you for your products, long time customer for years and I feel the price/functionality of your routers are great. Now the issue :p   :

Since the FW 1.2.1 Build 20250804 rel.79639(4555) of the BE230, my Playstation 2 (that used SMB v1 for file sharing) can't stream files properly.

Troubleshoot so far :

  • Worked perfectly with the FW Archer BE3600(EU)_V1_1.1.4 Build 20250318 (previous FW)
  • SMB sharing works perfectly with other client (Windows client, Apple TV client, ect...)
  • Playstation streaming works perfectly with Windows SMB V1 server and Linux SMB server.
  • Some leads : PS2 SMB client uses SMB V1, log on my Windows SMB server shows PS2 SMB client seems to close the connection when I select the file to stream and re-open it just after to start streaming. The issue, I understand with the new firmware is that the 1st connection works to select the file to share but when the client close & re-open to start streaming, the SMB server of the TP-link doesn't respond anymore. Issue was not present on previous firmware. It is just a guess as I don't have access to BE230 logs of the SMB server.

Conclusion on my side : Issue is located on SMB server side of the BE230 as my PS2 client has no issue with Windows SMB server or Linux SMB server.

Questions :

  • Did you change anything on SMB functions on the firmware 1.2.1 (changelog said Enhanced the stability and security of device) ?
  • Any chance to provide me some help with SMB sharing (as the UI just provide ON/OFF Toggle) ?
  • Is there a way to revert back to FW 1.1.4 (changelog said This firmware release cannot be downgraded to the previous version) ?

I understand this use case is niche, but as long time customer, I felt like the auto-update just disable a key feature for me without possibility to revert it back officially :(

Thank you for reading, any help/feedback is appreciated. I can provide more info if requested.

Regards

Kalagan

Update on my side after further testing. Short version : now it works.

Long story :

I haven't specified my complete network setup : BE230 as main router and serveral satellite router with Ethernet Backhaul. The issue was one of the AX55 as satellite router.

If I connect the PS2 directly to the BE230 with USB sharing over SMB, no issues. As soon as I come back to my previous working setup (PS2 is behind the AX55 as satellite router on ethernet backhaul), SMB sharing was not working.

So the correct statement I should made is : the SMB sharing is not working anymore after the FW 1.21 of BE230 and the FW 1.4.1 of the AX55.

As pushed at the same time, all router (main & satellites) upgraded the firmware at the same time. Funny enough, all features worked for clients connected behind the AX55, except the SMB. After a factory reset and reconfiguration of the AX55 as a satellite router, the problem is gone.

You can close the topic (or i can do it if you show me how to do it).

Thank you Kevin for giving me the ambition to push the trouble shooting further (and make false guess about what the issue was  :p  )

Regards

Hello @Kalagan74, thanks for asking in the community.

Could you please show me how to stream files from the USB drive attached to the BE230 on the PS2? Which application or software are you using to stream? If possible, please take a short video showing how you do that.

To streamline the identification of the behavior and to check whether it's caused by the BE230's firmware update, could you please try downgrading to the previous 1.1.4 version by following this guide (Method 2)?

Awaiting your further checking. Thank you very much.

Oh, I just missed your first question.

From the firmware release notes, there is no sign that any modules have been changed in the SMB functions on the 1.2.1 version. While if it is confirmed to be an issue, the development team would be very happy to investigate it further and find out why it happens.

Hello and thank you very much for your reply.

On Playstation side, I used OPL homebrew for streaming ISO files. here is  the link of the github page of the project in case you  need i;t : Open PS2 Loader. Behavior is the same for stable & beta release (not working on FW1.2.1/working with 1.1.4)

You will find the log of the working windows SMB server during the ISO stream, I will try to explain just after as I am not an PS2/network developper :

When launched, the OPL server will connect to the server to list the files on the shared folder and display UI. 192.168.0.22 is the PS2 IP. During the browsing of the shared folder, *.cfg/png files are read from the server. The red arrow (sorry for my painting skills) in the log  is the time I select a file to stream (*.iso). Then, as the PS2 IO chip as to reboot from "SMB client mode" to "game mode", we see the SMB Playstation client disconnected and reconnect 4 times in a really short time (see timestamps). The last time it's reconnect, the streaming is starting and the iso load properly.

With the BE230 FW 1.2.1, OPL client can connect to browse file, but during this reboot phase, the OPL SMB client can't reconnect to the BE230 (black screen on PS2 like it's trying to load files from an unresponsive SMB server). I confirm that it's was not the case with FW 1.1.4 (althrough I didn't revert it back yet), the SMB server on router side don't drop the connection and the files are streamed correctly (althrough slower than on Windows Server, but that's not an issue for this application).

Regarding the opportunity for your R&D team to reproduce the issue with a real PS2 hardware, I don't know if I can link a tutorial on this forum. I just let you know I have all the disc versions of the *iso ripped on my HDD. Nevertheless, I guess that the issue can be replicate with any SMB client that have "fast" disconnection/reconnection behavior.

Thank you in advance for taking to read and sharing with tech team. If you need more information, don't hesitate to ask.
