Hi

I have a Deco X73 and some X68 for our NBN (we're in Australia). We also have a Synology NAS which I would like to access using OpenVPN. I might look at other options, but even if I do, I want to get this working just to prove I can. I followed two tutorials and weirdly the first time I did, OpenVPN worked on my laptop and not by mobile. This seemed to happen occasionally, but then the laptop (Windows) stopped working (I wonder if I imagined it).

Anyway, I set up Synology DNS Server and a certificate through Let's Encrypt. I thought I had checked if my external IP was public or private, but got my wires crossed. I have now got a public dynamic IP address and my understanding was that with Synology DNS this should all just work! Well it didn't.

After googling and searching forums etc, I then used the Deco Lab Port Checker and also the Wi-Fi Toolkit app which is essentially the same thing and although I have the Port Forwarding set-up for port 1194 it only shows 80, 443 and 20001 (which doesn't say what it is and what it is for). I searched on the public IP which I hope is the right one to check. Any ideas on how to get the port to open?

Thanks

  @BritishKiwi

Hi, welcome to the community.

Is the IPV4 address on the Deco App>More> Internet Connection the same as the IP address displayed on https://whatismyipaddress.com/ ?

As Deco X73-DSL doesn't support OpenVPN, did you enable the OpenVPN server on the Synology NAS so that the remote VPN clients can connect to the VPN server, then access the network resources on the NAS?

Have you tested on the local computer to see whether it can directly connect to the OpenVPN service on the NAS when both devices are under the same network?

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

  @David-TP thanks for the response.

Yes, my IP4 IP address is the same on whatismyIPAddress.

I followed the guide from both Wunder Tech and Space Rex. I set up DNS Server and VPN Server on Synology NAS. I set up OpenVPN on VPN Server. I then did the Port Forwarding through the TPLink app using the IP for my NAS and the port for OpenVPN.

I haven't tested OpenVPN on the local network, as everything I've read says you need to be off the local network. I connected myy laptop to my phones hotspot. My when I have been doing this, the NAS has been accessible. I am not sure how I test it through the local network. I will try and do this whilst I am still on the local wifi, but if there is a different way, please let me know.

Thanks

@David-TP So I tried without disconnecting from my WIFI and didn't connect. However, when I check the logs, it looks like i did connect at some point. Not too sure when.

So I tried connecting to phone and this :

"Connection failed

There was an error attempting to connect to the selected server.

Error message: server pushed compression settings that are not allowed and will result in a non-working connection."

I checked the VPN Server logs and it shows it connecting to three different IPs and then disconnecting from them.

I've not had this message before.

@David-TP I have now commented out the line comp-lzo and suddenly it works. I have no idea why it is working now and not before. But thanks for giving me some clearer pointers as I was just going in circles.
