This guide cuts through the confusion to reveal the distinct superpowers of Internet Backup, Configuration Backup, Replace Main Deco, and Set Main Deco—ensuring you use the right function for the right moment.

Internet Backup: The "Lifeline" During a Service Outage

Internet backup is about maintaining continuous operation when your primary service (like fiber or cable) fails. It prevents downtime by continuously monitoring the status of your main fiber or cable internet connection. The moment an outage is detected, the system fails over to a pre-configured mobile hotspot.

Configuration Backup: The "Blueprint" for Hardware Recovery

Replace Main Deco: The "Seamless Hardware Upgrade"

When you purchase a more powerful and advanced Deco model and wish to use it as the central device in a mesh system without losing the existing network configuration. via "Replace Main Deco", the new main Deco is inheriting the network from its predecessor.

If you look further, there is one more feature-Set Main Deco, which is often used to troubleshoot whether the main Deco is related to certain issues. It lets you promote one of the working satellite units to be the "New Main Deco" without losing the existing network configurations. So you can quickly isolate whether the problem is with the specific Deco unit.

  • a 4G/5G Deco is working as the satellite Mesh unit.
  • The satellite 4G/5G Deco also needs to support the "Internet Backup" feature.
The backup settings will be saved as Deco APP local data in the mobile phone storage and securely encrypted in the TP-Link Cloud.  The new Deco will only inherit the advanced features that it supports. Once the main Deco is designated, plug it into the ISP modem via an Ethernet cable.
