Model: Tapo H500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

Why is 24/7 recording on H500 limited to just 5 cameras?! On our regional site or in the manual there is not a single mention of this limitation. Only that it supports 16 cameras.

(I can see that on US site there is a line that 24/7 can be used with 4 cameras, which is again false). Based on that it seems obvious that this can be changed. So what is the limiting factor inadequate hardware in H500? Or just arbitrary software limitation.

I was well aware of this limitation for "AI features" but honestly we could not care less for those. But saying that the device supports 16 cameras while only 5 are really fully supported.

We have multiple locations with plethora of cameras running and were hoping to slowly migrate to H500 devices but alas we recon we will be returning ours as not working properly on pretext of false claims.

There is also the audacity of claiming compromising safety while creating local account for the cameras when using them with typical NVRs. Even though tp-link does not offer any real solution as well.

  @Fercik

Generally, such limitations are designed to ensure better performance and stability. You can also find this information in this FAQ section on our official website. How many devices can connect to a Tapo Hub at the same time?

Tapo H500 supports up to 4 cameras for simultaneous continuous recording. If you are able to configure 5, please check whether any device has stopped recording normally or if something else seems off.

I agree.  I don't think they should say that the hub works with 16 cameras then limit the use of continuous recording to 4 devices.  I now have 5 cameras and I have to set one to Event Detection although that's really not what I want.

Saturday

  @Wayne-TP On reddit thread I made on this issue there were multiple users that reported multiple cameras working just fine. Someone from TPLink chimed in that the limit was placed because of performance issue but did not elaborate further and ignored us asking for more details about it. At least they provided us with an explanation as for why some H500 are allowing more than 4 cameras. Although some user with fairly new H500 also reported being able to add more.

And a big reminder that US is not the whole world. When I open US tplink site the first thing that happens is I am told to move to my regional site. There was not a single mention of such limitation on our regional site. There was nothing about it in FAQ or in the User manual. And on Europe site there was just a very small fine print mentioning it.

  @PEIguy Unfortunatelly unless you got one of first H500s made then you are stuck with 4 cameras on 24/7. 16 supported cameras is basically useless functionality as regular tapo app already offers the same functionality of live view. And event based recording is gimmick at best and totally useless at worst.
