Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

Deco M5 WiFi disconnects with internet multiple times daily after firmware 1.9.1 update (AP Mode)

Problem Summary

Since updating to firmware 1.9.1 (Build 20250909 Rel. 37570) approximately one week ago, my Deco M5 mesh network experiences intermittent WiFi disconnections, occurring roughly 6 times per day at random intervals.

Symptoms

  • WiFi devices lose internet connectivity but remain connected to the Deco network
  • Wired connections directly to the main router (KPN Experia Box V10) remain stable throughout
  • The problem appears to affect the main Deco unit that is connected to the router
  • Disconnections are random and not triggered by any specific event

Network Configuration

Hardware

  • Mesh system: 3x TP-Link Deco M5 (with 1 spare unit available)
  • Main router: KPN Experia Box V10 (fiber optic)
  • ONT status: PON and LAN LEDs on, Power LED off, Alarm LED off (ISP confirmed minor noise on fiber signal)
  • Connection: Main Deco connected to Experia Box via new Cat5 Ethernet cable

Deco Settings

  • Operation Mode: Access Point (changed from Router Mode a few months ago)
  • Firmware: 1.9.1 Build 20250909 Rel. 37570
  • Smart DHCP: Disabled (DHCP handled by Experia Box)
  • Beamforming: Disabled
  • Fast Roaming: Disabled

Additional Configuration

  • IP address reservations configured in Experia Box for all Deco units
  • Multiple smart home devices connected (Home Assistant, Zigbee devices, etc.)

Troubleshooting Already Performed

  1. Verified wired internet remains stable during WiFi outages
  2. Confirmed ONT is functioning (PON + LAN LEDs active)
  3. Disabled Smart DHCP on Deco system
  4. Disabled Beamforming and Fast Roaming
  5. Verified Deco is in Access Point mode

Timeline

  • Deco M5 system has been running for several months without issues
  • Changed from Router Mode to AP Mode a few months ago (no issues after this change)
  • Updated firmware to 1.9.1 approximately one week ago
  • WiFi disconnection problems started/worsened after firmware update

Questions

  1. Are there known issues with firmware 1.9.1 in Access Point mode?
  2. Is there a recommended stable firmware version I should downgrade to (1.8.5)?
  3. Could the IP reservations in my main router cause conflicts with AP mode?
  4. Should I try swapping the main Deco unit with one of the satellites to isolate the issue?

System Information

  • Deco Model: M5
  • Hardware Version: [please check your unit]
  • Firmware Version: 1.9.1 Build 20250909 Rel. 37570
  • Operation Mode: Access Point
  • Number of Deco Units: 3 active + 1 spare
  • ISP: KPN (Netherlands, fiber optic)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to provide logs or additional information if needed.

Hi, welcome to the community.

How many smart home devices do you have in total?

Can I have some screenshots of the network map on the Deco App, such as:

I've left a message about the beta firmware for Deco M5. Could you please help me test whether this version helps?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

@David-TP Thank you David for your reply.

See above the map: btw, the 'Tuin / diver' Deco is almost allways disconnected by purpose.

Normally I have around 20 devices connected to the Wifi, and approx 10 devices directly onto the KPN ExperiaBox V10.

@David-TP Yesterday I heard that KPN (internet provider) will replace my Experiabox by the KPN box V12. Maybe this will also improve the situation, I can test that tomorrow.

@David-TP I tested the situation now from saterday up to this day with my new KPN box modem router, but today my wife called me that she had no internet and that the TP-link Deco (the one connected to the KPN box) showed a red LED. So the problem seems to be still their, the change to a new modem router did not solve the issue.

Can you help me solving this issue?

  @Pewill

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback.

Have you tried to set a different Deco as the main Deco, maybe the "spare, almost-new" Deco M5?

How to replace the main Deco with another Deco

Did all the satellite Deco M5 units connect to the Mesh Network via WiFi Backhaul?

-Would there be any chance that you could connect them via cables to establish Ethernet Backhaul?

It is also recommended to contact the local technical support for further assistance or to check if the warranty service is needed:

Best regards.

Thanks for your reply:

1) replace the main Deco: I will test that this week

2) That's not possible and also the main reason for having this mesh wifi setup

Other thing: Gemini advised me to reserve an IP-adress for the Deco's in the main KPN Box, but put them outside the DHCP-pool. Good advise that can help also?

  @Pewill

Hi, thanks for the update.

It works occasionally. You can have a test on the KPN Box.

If Deco is the DHCP router, it doesn't allow reserving IP addresses out of the DHCP pool.

A small tip to find the MAC address of each Deco: It would be better to find and record the MAC address on the DHCP Client list on the KPN box first, instead of using the label MAC address on the Deco directly.

Best regards.

Yesterday

  @David-TP

Last week I changed the main Deco to an (almost new) other Deco, but the problem remains.

I think now that the problem all started with updating the system to the firmware 1.9.1.. Is there a way to do a downgrade to an older firmware version?

Hi, do you still remember the last firmware version?

If it is 1.9.0 Build 20250722, it can be downgraded directly via the web UI.

https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/deco-m5/#Firmware

While if it is on 1.8.5, a firmware recovery is required to downgrade to 1.8.5:

How to use firmware recovery on Deco

Best regards.

@David-TP I did not remember the previous version of the firmware, is there a way (log) to find out?
