Hi,

I have a home network set up with multiple nodes. All are paired and working, but when I completed a series of speed tests I find that the TL-PA4010P powerline adapters (with passthrough) have materially slower speeds (c.30-36Mbps) vs the TL-PA4010P (no passthrough) giving c. 70Mbps.

As part of the troubleshooting:

- Max number of nodes has not been exceeded

- Distance of all nodes is within 50m (cabled distance) to main port

- I have tested both the TL-PA4010P and the TL-PA4010 as a comparison in multiple locations - Performance difference exists, no matter which plug socket in the house I test with

In every instance the same result occurs - TL-PA4010P consistently underperforms the TL-PA4010 .

What is causing this and how can I resolve it?

Thanks!

Hi @BT2026 ,

Welcome to our community.

May I know how many nodes you have in total?

The speed that you mentioned 30-36Mbps, is the actual speed or powerline rate of the TL-PA4010P? You can learn about the difference in Explanation about the Powerline Rate and Actual speed of the Powerline Adapters.

When you test the speed, have you removed the client plugged into the TL-PA4010P?

Additionally, remove other nodes and test the speed of the TL-PA4010P and TL-PA4010 individually.

Hi,

That's an interesting finding. I've never thought about its potential effects before, but the Powerline adapters that feature a passthrough socket also include a "noise filter" intended to reduce interfering noise generated by devices connected to that passthrough socket.

Thanks for your response.

There are 8 nodes in total including the base station. The nodes being used are all part of the series that should be OK up to 16 nodes.

As you suggest, all tests have been done on a "like for like" basis - unplugging everythign from the network and using only my laptop with a direct LAN link to the Powerline Adapter to measure the speed. Interchanging between the TL-PA4010P vs TL-PA4010 with everything else staying the same gives the speed difference. I have also moved the powerline adapters closer to the base station to test and the discrepancy remains.

The speed of 30-36Mbps is the speed that my laptop sees through the TL-PA4010P when I do a speedtest on my laptop. The powerline rate (viewed through the utility) is higher, but still not as high as the TL-PA4010.

The TL-PA4010 achieves 63.5Mbps. (Yes, I know this is slow for some, but considering the fibre we are on is only 70mbps rated I am happy with this!)

So in effect it sounds like the passthrough power could be slowing this from c. 63mbps to 36mbps as per the article you gave the link to. Is that correct?
