Model: Archer AX50
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20251022 rel.69668

Hello,

I am experiencing random disconnections with my Archer AX50 router.

Router details:
Model: Archer AX50
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20251022 rel.69668

The connection randomly drops several times a day. In some cases, devices reconnect automatically after a few seconds, but in other cases the connection does not recover and I need to power cycle the router to restore connectivity.

This issue affects multiple devices on my network, including:

  • POCO F8 Ultra

  • POCO F7

  • POCO F6

  • Dell Inspiron 7580 laptop

  • Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 6 laptop

Since the problem occurs across different devices and operating systems, it seems likely that the issue is related to the router rather than a specific client device.

I have already tried rebooting the router, but the issue continues to occur.

Additionally, I would like to request a review of the current firmware version, as the random disconnections appear to be related to router stability.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hello @Alohomora ,

Welcome to our community.

For your case, the following are some suggestions that may help:

For WAN connection instability (if the router's Internet LED turns red/orange occasionally):
1. Connect a PC directly into your modem to verify if your ISP Internet is stable.
2. Make sure the Ethernet cable between your modem and the router is connected properly; replace old cables with new ones if needed.
3. Change the DNS Server of the router: login to the web management interface, go to Advanced > Network > Internet > Advanced Settings, and change the two DNS Servers to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.

For wireless client devices dropping :
1. Make sure the router is properly placed in an open area instead of inside a cabinet or shelf.
2. In the web interface, go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, and try different Wi-Fi channels to avoid nearby interference. Additionally, for 2.4GHz wireless client devices, set the 2.4GHz channel width to 20MHz; for 5GHz wireless client devices, set the 5GHz channel width to 80MHz or 40MHz to avoid interference.
3. Make sure the client devices are not included in any Parental Control profiles.
4. Make sure the network adapter drivers, system, or firmware on the affected client devices (your phones and laptops) are up to date.

  @Joseph-TP

Thanks, but this is not a configuration issue.

I have already checked the basic settings and the problem persists, so repeating generic configuration steps is not helping.

Also, I have bought a Tapo C260. It connects on 2.4 GHz without any problem, but it does not connect on 5 GHz at all.

So the issue is clearly on the 5 GHz band, not on the general configuration.

Please focus on that and let me know what specific checks or fixes there are for 5 GHz on the Archer AX50.

This seems to happen to a lot of users including myself and at certain times of day, normally when the dinner is being cooked, pretty sure in my case it was the microwave doing it, so check if you have interference in the house, this can be simply putting the router too near other electrics like the TV, hifi or console.

Hello @Alohomora ,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Refer to Tapo C260's specification, its Wireless Connectivity request IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, 2.4 & 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Here are specific checks and adjustments for the 5GHz band on your Archer AX50:

1. Disable Smart Connect: Log in to the web management interface of your router (http://tplinkwifi.net), go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, and disable "Smart Connect". This will separate your 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, allowing you to connect to each band independently.
2. Adjust Wireless Mode: For Wi-Fi 6 routers like the Archer AX50, switching the "Wireless Mode" on the 5GHz band to an older standard (such as 802.11a/n/ac mixed mode instead of ax mode) may improve compatibility with devices that don't fully support the latest standards.
3. Change Encryption Method: Go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings for the 5GHz band, and change the encryption method to "WPA2-PSK/WPA-PSK" to improve compatibility with older devices or cameras.
4. Try Different Channels: In the same Wireless Settings section, try selecting different wireless channels for the 5GHz band (such as channels 36, 40, 44, 48, or higher channels if available).

Important Note: Some camera devices, particularly IoT devices like security cameras, may have limited 5GHz support or may only be designed to work optimally on 2.4GHz due to the better range and wall penetration of that band. The 5GHz band offers faster speeds but has more limited coverage and doesn't penetrate obstacles as well.

As Bogle mentioned, certain environmental conditions may cause instability in 5GHz connections. Do your other devices also experience instability when connecting to 5G?
