Model: Tapo C500
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.3.6 Build 251110 Rel.61944n

My C500 goes offline during night. I use it for monitoring lambing in the sheep stable and one of three cameras goes offline. The problem seams to be the TP Link 9 V power adaptor. My theory is that when the IR LEDs are active, the power drain is just on the limit. I checked this briefly and the idle voltage is just under 12 V. I found another one in my junk box, marked 9 V 1 A and this is also idling similarly. However it had a different connector (reversed polarity), but that was an easy fix.

It is  well known that these cheapest/simplest possible devices like that are not at all impressive, since te manufacturer are trying to avoid  cost.

Now working healthy with the alternative and a little heavier power adapter.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your observations in such detail, and welcome to the community. We appreciate you taking the time to analyze the situation and report your findings regarding the Tapo C500 going offline during night‑time operation.

To help us better understand and confirm the scenario, could you please help clarify the following points:

  • Could you confirm whether your Tapo C500 is Hardware Version V1, right?
  • Are you currently using the original power adapter and cable supplied in the product packaging, or a third‑party power adapter?

Under normal conditions, we strongly recommend using the original power adapter and cable provided with the camera, as they are designed to deliver stable voltage and sufficient current under all operating conditions, including when the IR LEDs are active at night. Using non‑standard or alternative power adapters may result in voltage drop or instability, which could lead to unexpected offline behavior.

Best Regards

Yes it is a V1 unit. I have two V1 and one V2 and I switched between the two V1 units and the indoor unit has been working since this was done, which is good because it is used to monitor lambing. I did not switch between the power supplies, so if both power supply units are identical (looks like that) the problem is related to the camera and not the PSU. I have not yet tested the problem camera again, but will do.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the update and for taking the time to explain what you’ve tested so far. We appreciate the detailed feedback.

Just to confirm, after swapping the two V1 cameras, are both cameras now operating normally in their current positions? If so, we recommend continuing to observe them for a while and letting us know if the issue reappears.

If convenient, it would also be helpful if you could take clear photos of the power adapter labels for both V1 cameras. We’d like to verify that they are using the correct and identical specifications. In addition, please confirm that neither of the V1 cameras is connected via a power extension cable, as this can sometimes affect power stability.

Thank you again for keeping us informed. Please feel free to contact us if you notice any further issues during your continued testing.

Best Regards
