DHCP Issues on Wi-Fi Extender RE205
DHCP Issues on Wi-Fi Extender RE205
I have a main router on my network which uses DHCP to provide IPs to all devices on my network. I am using the RE205 in access point mode. By default, the internal DHCP of this extender should turn off automatically and the DHCP on the main router should be active. However, when I turn on the RE205, it starts assigning IPs by itself using DHCP to other devices and creates an IP conflict and my whole network starts acting out. Is anyone else facing this issue? Is there a way to turn off the DHCP on the extender. Please help me out.

Good day.
May I know the model number of your wireless router.
And please refer to this thread to manually configure the DHCP server:

Good day.
How about the model number of the main router?
Have you tried the previous link to manually configure the DHCP server?
Thank you!

I use a Sophos Firewall which is my main router. It is connected to a switch, which has a connection to my Extender which I use in access point mode. I visited the link you sent, however, my extender RE205 doesn't have separate DHCP server settings under Network. I think it has Auto DHCP which cannot be enabled/disabled manually?

Thank you very much for your kind reply.
Have you seen the following page where you could configure the gateway and DNS?
If still failed and no internet service, we would like to forward your case to our senior engineers, and please have a check of your email box.
Thank you very much.

Hi, yes as per your suggestion I have tried this. I can see this screen also. However, as soon as I turn this extender on access point mode, it creates conflict. When the extender is off, everything is seamless. I am attaching a photo for an example. When I ping my server, it works fine when the extender is off. But as soon as it is turned on, the connection keeps getting disturbed. You can see the photo of ping running when the extender is on. You can see multiple times it shows request timeout. This creates a lot of problem for me. This problem does not occur when the RE205 is turned off.

Yes, I am seeing that issue (and others) on RE205 hardware V2 with firmware V1.1.0 2019-09-29 rel78177

I am using the Hardware V3.0 with the latest firmware, and yet getting the same issue. I even got a replacement from tp link. But the issue persists. I suspect this is mainly because of Auto DHCP and tp link not allowing us to turn off DHCP permanently. Anyone knows a workaround for this? How can we forcefully turn off DHCP permanently?

Good day,
Thank you very much for your time and patience.
Sorry for the delay.
May I know the model number of your main router?
Currently, RE205 does not support manually turn off the DHCP server and it could only be manually configured to use the DHCP server of the home router;
When it times out once the extender plugged back, have you check the IP address and default gateway on the computer to see who assigned the IP address, the router o RE205?
And if possible, please also try to ping the gateway to check the connection as well?
Thanks a lot.
How about the model number of your home router and how did you notice that the DHCP server on the RE205 would randomly turn on?
By the way, how long have you had RE205 and when did this issue start?
Thanks a lot.

Home Router: Netgear DGND3700v1 running custom firmware. I also have some 5-port network switches on the LAN network too.
Device with problem: TP-Link RE205 V2 (UK).
How did I learn that the DHCP server was turning on: I was attempting to diagnose serious networking issues had after upgrading the firmware to the latest version RE205(UK)_V2_190929 (as soon as the RE205 is turned on when running RE205(UK)_V2_190929, all other devices connected to the LAN lose their connection to the router for at least 15minutes -- I suspect this issue is an ARP cache bug.) Whilst attempting to diagnose the issue I looked at the logs on the RE205 and saw that the DHCP server was also turning on when it shouldn't be. I tried RE205(UK)_V2_181123 but that still logs that it's enabling the DHCP server and sending packets when it shouldn't be. Only firmware RE205(UK)_V2_180815 works properly -- this version has the manual DHCP service on/off switch, so that's the version I now use.
How long have I had the RE205: 1 year, approximately, I think.
When did the issue start: As soon as I tried updating to firmware RE205(UK)_V2_180815 or RE205(UK)_V2_181123.
Description of primary bug: If RE205 V2 is running firmware RE205(UK)_V2_190929 OR RE205(UK)_V2_181123 and configured as an Access Point/AP with a Static IP: the DHCP server still runs PLUS it keeps making inappropriate DHCP requests every 30 seconds (very faulty behaviour!)
I hope this information helps.
Julie
