I can confirm I have the same problem with a TP-Link TD-W9980 model on the latest firmware as of this date (0.6.0 1.10 v0021.0 Build 141215 Rel.41342n). My ISP is Eircom which is an Irish VDSL "efibre" provider.

Looks like this is a recurrent issue for many of us.
I have a TD-W8970_V1 last firmware with the same issue plus:
- Ping default gateway fail
- Ping primary Domain Name Server fail
with DHCP server settings: Gateway, primary and secondary DNS server correctly filled
but everything is working fine.
ISP is vodafone, adsl 7Mbs (in fact 3 to 4 only).
So if you have some fix...

Test DNS Root fails because the root DNS blocks Ping and it won't affect internet access actually although it shows Fail?

Hello TP-LINK you guys should help us here. i have a TP-LINK router TD-W8980 and i have the same symptoms Stef and John_T and even with me adding the open DNS servers i still experience DNS failur tme to time. so can you guys help us? thanks

Agreed - I have exactly the same DNS Root fail. My internet connection drops out often and for months we've blamed all sorts of things. TheT had BT out when the line failed and incoming socket was rusty (! yes) it got replaced and all seemed well but occasional link drops carried on. The windy weather recently seems to make it worse, so im stuck in filtering out which is causing this but it might be two problems. So if this dns link error can be explained or sorted then i can concentrate on the other problem. Dave

I am really upset that TP-LINK didn't fix this issue or even gave a clear understanding of the problem. i just changed my TP-LINK router ( Another 60$ expens ) and so far so good no more internet connection failing. i really want to know what the problem is. Anyone from TP_LINK who can give us an explanation and an ETA to when this will be fixed.

I'm only moderately technical, so please be gentle... So I have had the TD-W8980 for over a year - no issues. The other day my devices started disconnecting randomly:
Windows laptop first as as it seems to be on 2.4GHz
then MacBook
then iPhone
Reset - restart - > all back to normal, however 'diagnostics' showing errors as described in this thread (everything else gets a Pass)
Then some Apps stop working, for example, Viber - showing consistently 'no internet connection' however internet and mail working OK.
I blamed BT first however they confirmed there was no issue on the line. So must be the box? Stupid question - could this be the sign of someone tempering with it remotely (I'm being serious here because I'm struggling with a stocker ex who'd previously been on my devices/network). If not, would you say it's time to get a new router?

I have been having the same problem except that its only the dns root failing.I have had the router for so long and have had no issues up to now.
