Model: HS210
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Ive been trying to setup the HS210 replacing only 1 of the dumb switches with an HS210.  Ive seen many success reports about this an the TP link app seems to support it as well.

So I've been trying to install an HS210 3 way switch. I'm replacing only one of my dumb switches. However when I hook it up like in the drawing , the tplink switch powers on but pressing it didn't turn the light on. I hear the relay in the switch clicking however.

If I turn the dumb switch on it turns on the lights but kills power to the tplink switch.

I've updated the tplink switch firmware to the latest and set it up in the app .

I've also tried to swap the red and black wires shown in the diagram but that did not help.

The original dumb switch configuration behaved as though both switches could control the light (no master/slave)

Any suggestions?

Here is how the dumb switches are wired (both have the same wiring configuration) and both dumb switches can independantly control the state of the lights.

The red and white are the travelers. Black is the load.

You do not have a neutral.

There never is a neutral connected to a dumb switch.

@JohnnyRockets

HS210 can work with an ordinary/dumb switch, however, the HS210 must connected to the Live wire in the circuit.

And you connect one of the traveller wired to the electrical wire, have you ever tried to connect both of them?

Below is the installation guide you can have a reference.

@Kevin_Z

Im installing the smart switch in a 3-gang box with 2 other switches controlling other lights. These are all on the same breaker. Would I be able to tap into a live wire (neutral) from one of these instead?

@JohnnyRockets

For your information, the HS210 is a three way switch; usually it is used as a pair; however, we can use it with an ordinary 3-way switch.

But to use the smart switch, it has to connect to the live wire.

Good day.
