I have just purchased a box of 4 of the P110 smart plugs. My intended use is the turning on/off of lights for security purposes. A major attraction of the Tapo products was the random on/off function.

 

However, in testing I couldn't get the on/off function to work soo I had a look on here for a possible solution. What I found was a thread back in 2020 that said the on/off random functionality was limited to 19:30 to 24:00. As a contributor commented in that thread, this is useless for the UK (and a lot of other countries) as in winter it gets dark by 16:00.

 

There was a reply to this comment that this would be looked at. I am trying to find out if that has been addressed over the past 3 year? If not, the product will have to be returned.

Hello Graham, there is no such limitation as far as I know. That post was likely a product issue that briefly arose at the time and has since been fixed.

 

By enabling Tapo plug's Away mode, the plug will turn on and off randomly within the set time period. 

 

If you have problems with the Away Mode make sure the time zone of the plug is correct (App ->Device Settings ->Device Info). Ensure that you have ticked the correct date (Sunday - Saturday)

 

Try to set a short time interval to test this feature, like 5 minutes.

Thanks for the reply. I have carried extensive testing over the past week anf this limitation does still exist in the units I have just purchased.

 

As examples, with the time period in away mode set to cover a wide period of time, the only OFF times were as follows:

 

  • Day 1 - 21:15 to 23:40
  • Day 2 - 21:45 to 23:50
  • Day 3 - 21:15 to 23:40

 

So, not only does the Random on/off only happen in the 19:30 to 24:00 window but also, as you can see, even when it does occur, it is hardly creating an impression of 'activity' in the property by turning off/on frequently, but the off/on times are very similar every day.

 

In summary, I think this Random off/on security feature is of no value/use whatsoever.

What's the firmware and hardware version of your plugs? Please ensure they have the latest firmware.

How about your Tapo App version?

Hi, the plugs are as follows:

 

Hardware - UK/1.0

Firmware (up to date) - 1.2.3   Build 230425   Rel 142542

App - 3.0.508

 

I have just tried the 5 min Away Mode test during the day (i.e. outside the 19:30 to 24:00 window). The light came on at the start and DID switch off and on as you said it should.

 

Let me try some more tests of a longer period and at different times of the day
