I was using the kasa app for the plugs and they have been running on and off for several years.  I set one up a few weeks ago to run some lights and it was keeping schedule perfectly.

We recently purchased a Tapo led light strip which I have setup successfully and my understanding is kasa has basically turned in to Tapo.  Rather than having 2 apps it made sense to allow the taponapp to control the kasa device.

I think this is when the trouble started. Now the devices will intermittently disappear from the app. When I turn a device on I often get a java time out error.  I have completely removed the devices from the kasa app and deleted the app.  I have added them directly into the Tapo app and this still keeps on happening.

My network has not changed (Unifi) they all run on a 2.4G with -36Db signal.  Network logs show no issues. The new light strip connects and stay connected without issue

Any ideas on what could be going on? Thank you.

After many hours of research I have possibly found the answer on the Unifi forum. These plugs to not liked unifis AP meshing.  I had previously disabled this for other reasons and at some point it has gotten turned back on.  I do not use or need meshing so have turned it off and the WiFi reliability has returned to these devices.  The light strips do not have this problem and I do wonder if this is more of a TP/kasa firmware issue.

If I ever require AP meshing for cheap network expansion these plugs will have to be binned.

As i understand there is no known issue between the unifi router and Tapo/Kasa device. May I know the models of your network devices, the main router and access points? Please share your network topology here, with a simple drawing or describe it as clearly as possible.

Does the smart device just disappear from within the Tapo app? Or does it show offline? Can it be restored to normal by refreshing the app homepage or force closing the app and reopening it?

Can you please confirm if the smart devices were disconnected from WiFi when the problem occurred? Do you still see the devices in the router client list as normally connected, or have they been disconnected?
