Hi all

I am about to get rid of my Ring doorbell as the contract ends in 2 weeks and frankly, I can buy one that doesn't need cloud storage. There is two Tapo doorbell cams I have looked at after spending hours and days trying to figure out which are best and do what. I think I'm down to two. The D235 & the D230S1. I've tried doing a pros and cons but it is driving me mad.

The first issue I have is, one has a removable battery, the other doesn't. We all know batteries are a weak point as they deteriorate so eventually the non removable will become a brick or possibly might continue using hard wire. So, does anyone know if the D235 battery can be replaced at its end of life or if it fails?

Next, one has the memory card in the doorbell body(D235) and the other(D230S1) in the hub. Why would Tapo do that? The card in the doorbell can be removed by smashing the hell out of the  doorbell cam body and there goes any evidence you had. The one in the hub however sits in the house safe and sound.  Is there a way to use the D235 with the hub that comes with the D230S1?

Another issue is I read a post that mentioned the chime quality on the D235 as fairly abysmal. is that true and how does the D230S1 compare?

Last issue (for now) is a mention I read that the chime doesn't work on the D235 if hard wired and used for 24/7 recording. That seems mad, it turns it into a mini CCTV video cam, surely I either read it wrong or it gives an incorrect picture of the situation?

Apart from all that, both cameras spec seem the same which tends to make me view the D230S1 as the better choice, have I missed some sepcification on the D235 that makes it better? other than the increase in battery capacity at the cost of being able to remove/replace it?

Anyone out there with knowledge or opinions on what I have raised here, I will be grateful to hear your thoughts as I really need to figure this out before my Ring expires. Thanks to everyone who took time to read this, I really appreciate it. Dave

Tapo D235's battery is non-removable. This model supports connecting to the Tapo hub to store videos. If you're worried that the videos will be lost if someone steals the doorbell, consider getting a Tapo H200 or H500, or subscribing to Tapo Care for cloud video service.

The siren volume is similar on both models:

  • Tapo D235: 98dB
  • Tapo D230: 96dB

*Level measured at 4-inch/10-cm distance.

Tapo D235 is still a doorbell when it is hardwired. The hardwired power option allows the doorbell to have better performance in the detection and recording features.

Hi  @deckhanddave,

I have a D230s1 and it works well, storing videos on the H200 hub sd card based on detection settings and also sending alerts/calls to phone, etc.

Based on Waynes advice, sounds like if you already have hard-wiring to the doorbell location you should get the D235 for slightly better performance (and no need to recharge battery ever 4-6 months, depending on your detection settings). Otherwise D230s1 is good for wireless.

Hope this is useful.
