I've already purchased a number of Tapo Smart lightbulbs and I would like to combine these with some Tapo motion detectors which would activate the lights, but only do so when the room is already dark.

Conditioning an action based on the time of day isn't viable because light levels change with the seasons and ALSO because of the weather.

So, is there a Tapo light sensor which I can buy - or can any of the other Tapo products be used to do this?

Unfortunately, Tapo does not have a separate light sensor at the moment.

That's disappointing, and a bit of a glaring omission from the TAPO product range.

Before asking here, I looked on other forums and found other people looking to do the same thing (the same "use case"), so there is certainly a demand for such a device/capability.

Please refer this request to your product design team.

I wondered if there wasn't already a discrete light sensor, whether the same result could be achieved using one of your indoor cameras - which obviously do "sense" light levels because they use this facility to switch on their Infra Red illumation, and the cameras can also detect motion.

Is there a way of triggering a smart bulb using a TAPO's camera's motion detection, but ONLY when the camera is using Infra Red illumination?

This is not supported. We recommend raising a feature request post for it, users who share the same thoughts can join your post and share their opinions. Our product team will review the feature requests regularly, hot topics with detailed background information (e.g., use scenarios, reasons why you want or don't want a particular feature, etc) will be prioritized for evaluation.
