Problems since day one.. My speeds are terrible on all devices cannot to my tp link extender. I tried all methods to set it up but the only that worked was pairing the devices (I need to replicate my SSID in another room. In that other room. My speeds are 30-70 mbps.. In the lounge near my main router my speeds are 500 mbps. In the second room my phone drops off the extender every few seconds. Then it won't see my 5ghz network at all. It i connect to my 2ghx network I get speeds of less than 2 mbps. In order to try and fix this I am trying to check/change the settings on every platform app available.. URL mac os app and ios app all ask for a password (NOT a user and password as stated everywhere online). EVERYWHERE says this password is admin but I get failed everytime. Therefore this brand new device is next to useless for me. I saw another poster say that on some firmware this was also happening to them even with the correct password. Is that what's happening to me?

Thank you for getting back to me with the detailed test results.

 

Have you read the FAQ: Explanation about the Powerline Rate and Actual speed of the Powerline Adapters?

It mentioned that 'The conversion rate (The ratio of transmission rate and Powerline rate) is about 30%-35%(the actual conversion rate depends on the electric wiring system)'

From the data you provided, 84.9/228≈37%. So the actual speed is already within a reasonable range.
If you'd like to improve the speed further, consider using a higher-quality Ethernet cable (ensure it's CAT5E or higher) to connect to the router.

You can also reduce the load on other devices in the circuit to see if this can increase the speed.

Hi,

 

TP-Link has moved away from the insecure method of default username/password "admin" to the method that requires the user to configure a custom password upon first access.

 

Without a password having been set the webpage should look similar to the first screenshot below and the second screenshot shows how it looks after a custom password has been set.

 

If you only see one password entry field, then it means a custom password has been already set on your device. To clear this password you need to reset the TL-WPA8631P by pressing and holding the little "Reset" button for at least 5 seconds.

  @woozle Thanks for that. After several resets I was indeed able to set a new password. I then think I successfully cloned my SSIDs via WPA and the extenders wifi button. However I can still see two tplink wifi SSIDs available. Is that normal or do I have to manually rename them. I had to disable private wi-fi address on my iphone in order to make it drop off less. But it still has a super weak signal compared to other devices and does still drop off. I have a feeling its not seeing the extender at all and is seeing my router in the other room. Thanks for all your help and advice.

If you are still seeing the two TP-Link SSIDs of the TL-WPA8631P (i.e. the ones printed on the sticker on its backside), then it means cloning the Wi-Fi was not successful.

 

Either try the procedure again or log into the TL-WPA8631P and manually enter the SSIDs and passwords you want it to have in the menu "Wireless" -> "Settings".

  @woozle Right. Nothing is working. I want to clone my router SSIDs and this kit wont do it. Pairing with the other extender with ethernet plugged into it or WPA pairing. Nothing works. I still see the detault tp-link SSIDS. If I rename them to manually clone my existing SSIDs. EVERYTHING stops working. My mac won't connect or my sonos etc. What a load of useless kit. I don't know what to do now.

speeds are still terrible but at least signal is now strong!

If you're experiencing low speed issues when connected to a TP-Link powerline device, there are several potential factors and troubleshooting steps you can take:
    1. Check powerline adapters' placement: Ensure that the powerline adapters are plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. 
    2. Test different electrical outlets and move them into the same room for comparison.
    3. Check powerline rates between the powerline devices via tpPLC utility/App, you could refer to this FAQ to understand the difference between powerline rate and actual internet speed: Explanation about the Powerline Rate and Actual speed of the Powerline Adapters
If the powerline rate is too low, refer to this FAQ to see if it will be better: What can I do if my powerline rate is very low?
    4. If the wired speed is normal, only wireless connection is slow, please try to change the Wi-Fi channel and channel width on the powerline extender.
    5. Check available firmware updates and ensure the powerline adapter and extender are both using the latest firmware.

  @Joseph-TP yes all been done before. I live in a very small flat with everything on same circuit and have never got more than 1/5th of the Wi-Fi speed that I get in the same room as my router
