Troubleshooting Tapo D210/TD21 Won't Wake Up Unless Watching Liveview in the Tapo App
This Article Applies To
Tapo D210(US/EU/JP/KP) V1.0
TD21(US/UK) V1.0
Description
Recently, you might have noticed that the Tapo D210 V1 or TD21 V1 doorbell has stopped detecting motion or recording events, except when you are watching the live stream in the Tapo app, where detection and recording work normally.
Troubleshooting Guide
Set the doorbell's detection sensitivity to the maximum level, then run the detection-range test on your doorbell. *We recommend conducting multiple tests to avoid coincidental or inconsistent results. How to test the detection range of Tapo battery camera
If the doorbell cannot detect anything during testing, or if the detection range is noticeably limited—for example, within just 1–2 meters, the issue is likely hardware‑related, specifically with the PIR sensor. In this case, a replacement will be needed. To proceed with the warranty, please contact the retailer or local TP-Link support. Contact Technical Support
For other cases, please contact technical support for further investigation.

@DSTP123 fingers crossed. I haven't received it yet so hopefully they are rolling it out by country, region, area. A little hope yet! Thanks for the update.

@DSTP123 This really is shocking, I've just discovered this thread after being on with Amazon support as that's where I purchased it from.
they're arranging for it to be "repaired" but I'm doubtful given the number of people having issues in this thread.
Just on the off-chance, how do I go about getting the beta firmware?

Exact same issue here on my TD21.
Installed just before Christmas. Motion and Person event detection working perfectly for the six weeks since installation. Events recorded to SD card in the hub and notifications sent to the Android app.
Then, on the weekend motion and person detection stopped working unless the app was active on the phone.
I'm on the V1.1.0 Build 251015 Rel.59297n firmware like other posters.
It's clearly not an issue with the hardware since detection works when the app is running and support saying to return the item for repair appears crazy since it's doing what it should do but only when the app is active. Kill the app and the detection stops working straight away. Open the app and it's back to working again. If the app is closed and I stand in front of the camera waving my hands at the sensor nothing happens. Turn the app on and the sensor picks me up walking up my path and sends an alert before I've even reached my door with no issues whatsoever.
So it would seem it's either a software issue that has stopped the PIR from waking up the camera or it's an app issue that for some reason disables Motion and Person detection option when the app is closed as per @Kazbop and @MrChuter findings and takes a second or two to reactivate them once the app is reopened (my app behaves the same, opens showing "Detection Off" and after a second that changes to the icons for Motion and Person detection).
Just really disappointed that nobody from Tapo is commenting on this any longer. The beta firmware they sent out to some users hasn't resolved the problem but they've gone radio silent since then. It's clearly an issue that will be affecting many of their users. Even if there isn't an immediate fix they could at least advise their users that it's still being looked at and we haven't just been ignored and forgotten about.

Well I have to say, dealing with their customer service team has been great. They've been very supportive and are facilitating my product exchange.
Judging by the lack of negative reviews on Amazon, it could be a hardware issue linked to a specific batch which these firmware updates have exacerbated. We will see.
