Model: Tapo L535B
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.4.1

The latest firmware on this bulb seems to have Auto Biorhythm (AB) instead of the simpler Auto Match / Auto Compensate functionality on earlier firmware or my other bulbs.

While being able to tweak the lighting level and temp in AB is a neat idea in theory, the fact that it is always either on or off is a major loss of practical functionality. It's impossible to override without going into the app. If a light has been set to a specific colour, temperature, or level, AB will override it the next time it hits a node.

Example: in my living room, I had various 'modes' set up, which I can choose via Alexa, to adjust the lights depending on what I'm doing, e.g. low light for watching movies, or red light feeding baby in the middle of the night, or warm light for a general 'cosy' atmosphere, and a default 'on' mode running Auto Match for all other situations. This was great with Auto Match as it can be overriden easily, but Auto Biorhythm is impossible to override without going into the tapo app, so it will return to AB as soon it hits the next Time Node. This is a backwards step from the Auto Match that Auto Biorhythm replaced.

To fix this, make Auto Biorhythm work like a choosable 'colour', just like how Auto Match worked before.

Hey @Dan451,

Thanks for the feedback!

Even before this was added to Tapo, this was actually an issue that I would experience with Home Assistant, where a workaround had to be specifically made to disable it.

For your recommended fix, would this not result in the same behavior - where the color would be set each time that time of day came around?

From my perspective, this is a feature that I would want to request be made available for the bulb's smart actions, or add a specific rule to turn off the feature when the device is manually adjusted.

Looking at the feature, I do have concerns for how it actually functions. Given the text "The device's bio-ryhtm settings will be applied each time the bulb turns on" makes me think that this setting is stored locally on the bulb.

Just want to add my support for this request - I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my L535 bulbs.

The override issue

Like Dan451, I use Alexa to switch between different lighting modes.
With Auto Match this worked perfectly because it respected manual overrides and didn't fight back.
Auto Biorhythm snaps back at every time node regardless, which makes multi-mode setups impractical.

Completely agree that making Biorhythm available as a smart action would be a great solution.

If "Enable/Disable Auto Biorhythm" were exposed in smart actions and accessible via Alexa, we could build routines like:

  • Default: Biorhythm on
  • "Alexa, movie time", Disable Biorhythm, set lights to low warm white
  • "Alexa, bedtime", Re-enable Biorhythm

On top of that, I'd suggest Biorhythm should respect manual overrides until the bulb is power cycled - so if you change the light manually, it pauses Biorhythm until the bulb is turned off and back on.

Biorhythm is a good concept - the customisable nodes and gradient transitions are genuinely useful improvements. It just needs override flexibility to be practical for real-world setups.

Turning on the old Auto mode was simply a case of selecting the Auto 'colour' (eg the little circle with 'A' for auto). This meant that:

a) Auto Match/Compensate could be selected as part of the 'turn on and customise lighting' option when setting up a shortcut or automation. This is key.

B) equally, selecting any other colour would necessarily de-select Auto mode.

C) Auto couldn't be on while any other, non-auto colour was on as well. So Auto never interfered when you set deliberate choice of light colour, brightness or temperature.

The problem with Auto Biorhythm is it exists entirely outside the system for choosing lighting colours, which means it can't be turned on or off by shortcuts and other smart automations, but interferes with them when AB is actually running in the background.

The old Auto mode was seamlessly built into that colour picking system, so it worked with shortcuts and automations.

Two possible solutions:

1. make turning Auto Biorhythm on or off work like choosing a colour preset, just like with the old Auto mode. That would mean that AB cannot be on at the same time as the lights are set to cyan, green, purple or whatever. And switching in and out of AB with automations and Alexa-drivrn shortcuts is simple.

2. Allow us to enable or disable Auto Biorhythm with shortcuts or automations.

I don't mind which, but option 1 might be more user friendly.

Agree with the need to make this feature integrated with colour options, or return the simpler auto match. I now have half my bulbs controllable through shortcuts to activate auto lighting and the other half with the newer firmware which are not. Such a half baked idea that does not have user experience in mind.
