Model: Tapo P100
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.4.3 Build 251205 Rel. 141413

The P100s are shown as connected to the Tapo app when the telephone is connected to my Wifi. If I'm traveling and access the Tapo-app, all P100 plugs are shown as disconnected. I have 4 cameras and 4 Tapo P115 which all works fine and are accessible when I'm traveling.

I noticed the issue the last year, but have been waiting for a firmware update to fix it. The issue persist and is only related to the TP-link Tapo P100 smart plugs.

 The end of the saga:

Were about to give up. I tested different hot spots instead of my default setup. These hot spots were setup with the same wifi settings as my home router. All existing devices automatically connected to the hot spot and the same issue arose. During this phase I noticed the spare P100 I did reset and set up showed up as fine. It did not come up as Disconnected in the Tapo app when my phone was connected to 5G.

I pondered a bit and came to a theory that the phone needs to be connected to the network I will connect the P100 to before I start the setup. Since I have different wifis for IoTs (2.4 ghz) and computer devices (5 ghz), my phone is (always) connected to the last one. Both network are stored on the phone, but i choose the 2.4 ghz network during the setup process on P100.

I made certain the phone was connected to the network for IoT-devices (2.4 ghz) from the start. I then reset the three other P100s one by one and set them up again. All P100s are now OK and available in the app when I not connected to my wifi.

Lesson learned: Always connect the phone to the same network the P100s are to be connected to before starting setup.

@Wayne-TP, I have been through all the guides. Both my network and dns are fine. All 12 Tapo units have been given IP-adresses and are connected to the network. All 12 units shows up and are active and controllable through the the Tapo app for Android when the phone is connected to the same wifi.

When I'm traveling and connected via 4G or 5G, or my mobile router, only the P100 plugs are shown as disconnected in the Tapo app. Coming back home and connecting to my home wifi again the P100s shows up as connected. It seems like the P100s communicates directly with the app on the phone on the same wifi, not through the central hub and the account my Tapo app is connected to. The 8 other devices does not behave like this and can be remotely controlled when I'm traveling.

The P100s have been reset and set up multiple times. I'm certain I have not messed up the setup. I find them using bluetooth in the app and connect them to my wifi.

Thank you for sharing that. I’m glad your issue is resolved, though I must say this is the first time I’ve seen a solution like this — it’s unusual, as normally these settings shouldn’t have an effect.

To help me understand your setup better:

  • Are both Wi‑Fi networks from the same router (i.e., a split 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz setup)?
  • Do they have identical wireless settings?
  • In addition to your main Wi‑Fi (which can be split into 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with separate SSIDs), does your router also provide a dedicated IoT network? If so, is it the IoT network you're using?

Yes

  • Do they have identical wireless settings?

Only different name and frequency (2.4 vs 5 ghz) for the wireless networks

  • In addition to your main Wi‑Fi (which can be split into 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with separate SSIDs), does your router also provide a dedicated IoT network? If so, is it the IoT network you're using?

No special or dedicated IoT network.
