Model: Tapo H500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.12

I have been using the Tapo H500 Hub for a few months with stable connection to my eero Mesh WiFi-6 network.

Over the past couple of weeks it has been intermittently losing connection for a couple of days at a time and having a red/green flashing light indicating WiFi connection lost.

If I move the H500 Hub to a location where I can get Ethernet cable, then it comes back online.

When I then search for WiFi, I can connect it to a test WiFi-5 SSID, but it does not see my WiFi-6 eero SSID, nor my mobile hotspot.

I even tried a factory reset of the H500, but still intermittently not seeing my WiFi-6.

Also, this caused me to lose a year of temperature records from a T310 sensor. 😞

Any clues?

What channel is your WiFi 6 5GHz network currently using? Or more specifically, when this problem occurs, which 5GHz channel is it on?

If your router switches to a channel that the Tapo H500 doesn’t support, the hub won’t be able to scan and find that WiFi network. You could try locking the router’s 5GHz channel to 36, 40, 44, or 48 to see if that resolves the issue.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for this suggestion - I think that you could indeed be right!

I have checked my eero WiFi App and it was showing 5Ghtz, Channel 114, which meant Tapo H500 hub not able to connect to WiFi.  When I temporarily ran an Ethernet cable to it, then it came online and I was able to search for available WiFi networks and like before it just can't see my WiFi SSID.

A day later, my eero network showed 5Ghtz, Channel 144 and was back online again.

Unfortunately eero does not allow me to manually set the WiFi channels as this is dynamically auto-optimised to provide the best possible Mesh WiFi speeds.

Do you know which 5Ghtz WiFi channels the Tapo H500 does not support?

Which country are you located in? What's the region code (e.g., EU, US) of your Tapo H500 and the router?

*Tapo device's region code can be found on its product label.

  @Wayne-TP

On the base of my Tapo H500 Hub, it says R-NZ, for New Zealand.

The eero 6+ routers are also R-NZ.

Interestingly for at least the past 12 hours, my eero's have been running on 5Ghtz channel 114, yet the Tapo hub is staying connected this time!

BUT, when I use the Tapo App to look for available networks, it still does not seem my mobile hotspot, and compared to before, it is now no longer seeing 2 WiFi-5 SSID's which it previously DID see from this location in my house!

Both channel 114 and 144 are DFS channels. These are shared frequencies where home WiFi routers must actively listen for and avoid interference from radar systems (like those used for weather or aviation). When radar is detected, the router is legally required to immediately disconnect all devices and switch to another channel, which can cause the intermittent dropouts you saw.

Therefore, the ideal solution for your case is to manually set your router’s 5GHz band to a fixed, non-DFS channel. The ability to set a static WiFi channel is a fundamental and nearly universal feature in consumer routers. If you’re unsure how to do that, we recommend contacting your router’s manufacturer support directly. Or you may ask if there is a way to avoid the DFS channel?
