Troubleshooting Tapo Automation: Smart Plug Fails to Turn On at Low Temperature
With the weather getting colder, I thought I’d give my Tapo smart home setup a new twist. I set an automation to turn on the smart plug whenever the temperature drops below 12°C. Seemed simple enough—just a little backup to make sure the space stays cozy without me constantly checking the thermostat.
Most of the time, it works exactly as planned, kicking in right when it should. But every now and then, I’ll get a notification: Failed to turn on the plug. No real pattern to it, just randomly decides not to work when I actually need it.
Now I’m trying to figure out what’s going wrong. Maybe there’s a fix, or maybe it’s just a glitchy side of smart tech. Anyone else have similar experiences with Tapo automations?

Please check if the smart plug's network connection is stable. If it's offline (unable to be managed remotely) or if the Wi-Fi is disconnected, the automation won't work properly.
Check the signal strength of the smart plug: Tapo app > device page > Device Settings > Device Info > tap the wifi/signal icon to check the RSSI rate.
Strong: more than -50 dBm
Good to Average: among -70 dBm to-50 dBm
Poor: less than -70 dBm
If the wifi signal is strong, check whether there is a cloud disconnection issue. When you receive the automation failure message, switch phone's network to cellular data and try to control the smart plug directly in the Tapo app, see if the remote control is functioning properly at the time.
More troubleshooting suggestions: What can I do if the Smart Action/Automation doesn’t take effect as expected?
