Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.17

Hi all,

I just acquired the above doorbell camera along with an H200 Hub, into which I have inserted a new Sandisk 64GB MicroSD Card, duly formatted.

I have set everything up and installed the doorbell camera near my front door and can access a live view of my house entry area. The camera also wakes when the doorbell button is pressed, and instant notification of this is sent to me via my iPhone 13. A video recording of the event is logged and stored. My wife also receives notification.

However, I cannot get the camera to wake via the PIR sensor, or register motion or person detection, no matter what I do.

Moreover, when the camera is already active (say, due to me viewing the live view, and the status LED is lit up green) motion is still not detected and no notification of movement is sent if I walk around in front of the camera.

I have tried walking across and back in front of the field of view (as I'm aware the PIR sensor requires movement across it's range to work), and moving my hand across in front of the sensor at varying distances, but nothing happens.

In respect of settings on the app, I have set the wake up setting to 'Event Detected' and wake up sensitivity is at '10'. I have set the detection zones for all except Package Detection to the full field of view, and all sensitivities to '10'. I have also tried just setting Motion Detection on, at full sensitivity, but it still doesn't register movement.

Privacy zones is toggled Off. Battery is fully charged. Notifications is 'On' for all activity types.

I have tried removing and reinstalling the camera and the hub, and have rebooted the hub a few times. I have also rebooted my router. The Tapo firmware and the App are both up to date.

Also, I have tried changing the Clip Settings as indicated in one of the FAQ's about Notifications, but this made no difference.

In a nutshell, the camera has never shown any signs that the PIR sensor is working and I think it's DOA.

As a last resort before returning the unit, I wanted to ask if anyone has any ideas? It's as if the sensor has a cover over it!

Thanks,

Stuey

Ok, so here is an update as promised.

The replacement worked fine and motion/person detection was very sensitive even on the default 6/10 sensitivity. So the previous unit was broken.

As an aside, I had a hell of a time getting the correct chime to ring from the H200 hub. For some reason, it kept playing the Jingle Bells sound, continuously, when the doorbell was pressed no matter which ring tone I selected. I see this has been a common issue. The only solution I found was to keep resetting the hub and doorbell unit and play around with the settings and it eventually worked, but as to what fixed it I have no idea. I could not pair the chimes as I'd read other people had done.

The firmware on this is quite flaky I feel.

So it looks like I haven't missed anything.

I'll send it back and try another brand, as this motion detection problem seems to pop up on here a fair bit.

This is possibly a hardware issue on doorbell's PIR sensor indeed, since the doorbell won't be woken up by any movement.

Did you return it or ask for a replacement? We'd like to hear your update if you opt for a replacement!

Hi Wayne,

I am sending it back to the vendor tomorrow. I'll post an update once I have the replacement.

I've been messing around with it off and on trying all sorts of things until today (when I got the OK to return it) and it has never responded via the PIR sensor.

Cheers

Stuey

Did you adjust the ring settings on the device page of the smart hub or the doorbell?

I set the Doorbell Ring (via the Doorbell on the App) to Off because I wanted only the Hub to chime.

Then I set the Hub to Doorbell Ring 3 which is the classic doorbell sound 'ding-d*ng'.

However, the chime sound would remain on its default of Doorbell Ring 1 (the Jingle Bells tune) and continue for a long time, even though the chime set through the app remained on Doorbell Ring 3.

As noted though, by some fluke it's ok now, but it took various resettings to get the devices to work as set through the app.

No worries now; it's working really well.

Yes, I'd read that page already. However, bizarrely, when I tried this the App stated that the version of the firmware on my H200 did not support remote chimes (or something to this effect). I checked, and this function was added about 5 versions ago. Besides, the one I send back worked in this respect and had the same firmware version.

In any case, once I'd reset both the camera and the hub a few times, it seemed to work. I have a gut feeling there is probably a sequence of actions you need to go through in a particular order to make these devices play well together, but it isn't documented, given the numbers of people with apparent firmware issues. I've noted with both units, the initial firmware update ceased mid-update and I had to restart after waiting hours (a common issue - yes I'm aware you're not supposed to do this) so I think the update may take a few resets to initialize.

Anyway, as I say, it's working now.

(I've just received notification that there's another update, but given how many times I've read that updates cause issues I'm reluctant...)
