Model : Hardware Version : Firmware Version : ISP : I called tech support today to see if I needed to update my firmware and they said as long as everything is working I shouldn't do any update. They said this was an optional update.Aren't I missing security updates by not keeping my firmware up-to-date?Every article I see on network security says to keep firmware updated.Thoughts? Thanks in advance. Currently I am using 3.17.0 Build 20151009 Rel.61423n

Exactly what error is that?? The OP never mentioned any type of error - he/she simply asked a question about the availability of firmware updates.

Cannot upgrade firmware
2018-05-31 01:46:38

[*]Error code: 18005
[*]Upgrade unsuccessfully because the version of the upgraded file was incorrect. Please check the file name.
From the router page:

[*]Firmware Version: 3.13.34
[*] Build 140424 Rel.59644n
[*]Hardware Version: Archer C5 v1 00000000
[*]The underside "version" reads: ver 1.20
and the files extracted from the zip file:

[*]C1200v1_us-up-1.1.2 Build 20180123 rel.77424.bin
[*]GPL#U00a0License#U00a0Terms.pdf
[*]How to upgrade TP-LINK Wireless AC Router.pdf
So, what's the deal? I don't understand.
HOW COME LINE BREAKS ARE STRIPPED FROM QUOTED TEXT?
Actually there was some confusion about my model and it turns out the 1900 even though it says C9 has different firmware so there is no update. But....of course this raises another question - when does tp-link stop updating firmware for a router? Is my router simply too old and I should upgrade to be more secure? We purchased it about 2 years ago and it was a new model at the time.

Customer experience?
2018-06-04 03:37:38
This board seems to be a bit of a monologue i.e. customers venting frustration with limited or zero feedback from tp-link.

Wasn't the whole objective of social-media to improve communication and introduce a two-way street?

From my own perspective my TP-LINK router (C9 V1) is working OK for the moment, I have no idea if it is still supported or if ever a new firmware will be introduced in Europe. And guess what there is no one to ask? Am I safe from virus threats - who knows?

A day will come when it does need to be replaced, and the customer experience will be No 1 in informing future customer decisions.

Absolutely not. You misunderstand. These "fora" are for customers to help themselves thus cutting down support costs. _Reputable_ companies will monitor them and chime in, but few are these days. :(

P.S. I did get a response to a direct support query from a tech support agent from somewhere in Africa. They told me to do a full reset (button + power cycle) and then try to upgrade my firmware. No go. No further response. I agree with others: forget Tp-Link.

If a firmware update is available, obviously they made a change to improve something in the product otherwise they wouldn't have put it out. Always upgrade firmware.
