[Guide] My New Router is Not Obtaining an IP Address from My Cable Modem

Setting up a new router should be a straightforward process, but many users encounter a frustrating issue: after connecting the router to their existing cable modem, the internet fails to work. The router’s internet light remains amber or red, and no websites load while your modem indicates that everything should be working.

This common problem is often caused by a networking phenomenon known as MAC Binding.

What Is MAC Binding?

MAC Binding (Media Access Control Binding) is when a cable modem retains the MAC address of the last device it was connected to—typically your previous router or computer. When a new device is connected, the modem does not recognize its MAC address and refuses to assign a public IP address from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is similar to trying to cash a check without proper identification: the modem cannot verify the new device, so it denies access.

How to Fix MAC Binding

Fortunately, resolving MAC Binding is simple and requires only a few steps. Follow this procedure to reset the modem and allow it to recognize your new router:

Option 1: Detailed Setup Process to Help the Modem Clear the Stored MAC Address

  1. Power Down the Modem
    Unplug both the power cable and the coaxial cable from the back of your modem.
  2. Connect the Router
    Use an Ethernet cable to connect your new router to the modem. Ensure the cable is plugged into the WAN port on the router.
  3. Power On the Modem (Without Coaxial)
    Reconnect the power cable to the modem, but leave the coaxial cable disconnected. This allows the modem to reset its memory.
  4. Wait 3–5 Minutes
    Give the modem time to flush its stored MAC address and prepare to accept a new one.
  5. Reconnect the Coaxial Cable
    After the waiting period, plug the coaxial cable back into the modem.
  6. Check Router Status
    Once the modem fully connects to the internet, check the internet light on your router. For TP-Link routers, a white, green, or blue light typically indicates a successful connection.
  7. Test Your Internet Connection
    Open a browser and visit a few websites to confirm that your internet is working properly.

Option 2: Use the MAC Cloning Feature on Your TP-Link Router

If your router supports the feature, you can also use the MAC Cloning feature to make your new router use the MAC address of your previous router, or of a device you know works when connected directly to your modem. Learn How to do this

Still Having Difficulties? Contact Your ISP First!
In rare cases, the modem may still refuse to release the old MAC address. If this happens, contact your ISP and request that they remotely clear the modem’s MAC binding.

@Maxwell

That might be an indication of something else.  While the router may have issues its always best to start at the source and work back.  What i would suggest is logging into your modem and getting its logs.  For cable modems the address is typically 192.168.100.1.  You may need to obtian the log in credentials for the modem either from your ISP or online from the device manufacturer.  If its a TP-Link modem the username and password are both "admin" by default.  Once logged in look at the logs for any T3 or T4 Timeouts.  These indicate a service level issue which typically requires a maintenance dispatch.  If there are no T3 or T4 time outs next look at the Channels.  You will want to make sure your downstream channel power level is between -12 and +12 dBm on each channel.  Anthing outside this will require the ISP to make some changes to your service, most require a dispatch to your home.  Lastly the SNR on the Downstream should be mid 30s to 50 again if there is an issue the ISP will need to fix it.   Upstream is never much of an issue so nothing there to really worry about.

If the modem checks out then we would want to look at the router.  The first step for that is to do a Firmware update if available.  and if not then we would need to dig deaper into troubleshooting.  Please let us know if that needs to take place.

@Carl I too have been having this probably recently. I had to restart my network and my C5400 would not obtain the IP address from the modem, even though the modem was on and connected to the internet. After a few resets this resolved.

Carl, Thanks for this tip. I just ran into this issue with my new AX3000 router. I figured it was still bound to my old Linksys WRT1200AC but I couldn't figure out how to make my Motorola MB8600 modem clear the arp cache. This worked marvelously! :D Thanks again Bob

@Carl

Tried this method. Called TP service line and my ISP. Both said after numerous troubleshoots they couldn't help me. Any ideas beyond this?
