Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.8

Hi All,

Just set up my M9 Plus 3 AP system and boy am I seeing some horrendous connection speeds. I called support yesterday and they had me unplug the auxiliary APs, and I’m only seeing 28Mbps on my 2x2 AC iPhone X. The PC’s tested marginally better- my desktop with a 600Mbps AC adapter is at 150mpbs, and my laptop with A 650Mbps radio connecting at 350Mbps.

I have no competing wireless networks, and there are no interference sources in or around my house.

With previous Xyzel 3000 CenturyLink Router, I was able to achieve 450Mbps on my laptop which I verified before setting up the Deco, and 120Mbps on my iPhone, if I recall correctly.

I’ve disabled the 2.4ghz band in order to try to force the devices to use a faster connection, but still no luck. All IPS, QoS, and security services are disabled. TP-Link Support told me they’d put me in touch with an Engineer, but I have yet to see anything come through.

Im a Network Specialist by trade, and perform wireless maintenance and augmentations daily, so I’m pretty comfortable in saying that these speeds, especially on my mobile device, are unacceptable. I can’t understand why my 1Gbps Fiber connection, which when directly connected to the ISP provided router were hitting 850Mbps, is only able to hit 450Mbps on the Deco at the demarc, and why my end device speeds are so low.

Any help? Advice? Secret firmware or developer mode I can enable to really start nailing down the settings, like forcing 80mhz channel bonding or separating the networks by 2.4/5Ghz? Can I flash this thing with DD-WRT or something similar and make it actually usable for speeds I couldn’t get in 2010 on 802.11G?

Might take a while to reply, internet’s slow.

@matmatician

I've been scouring the internet for solutions and found this

https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2429/#:~:text=Try%20removing%20QoS%20settings%3A%20Deco,feature%20in%20the%20Deco%20app.

Copied from the link

3. Troubleshooting:

  • Try removing QoS settings: Deco APP>>>QoS>>>(Set Application priority to Standard, Remove all high priority devices, set the Bandwidth to 1000Mbps upload and 1000Mbps download)
  • Try turning off the UPNP feature in the Deco app. ( If you can't find this feature in the Advanced menu, you may ignore this one. ) (Kindly note that some online games might not be able to connect after turning off UPNP on the Deco.)
  • Try downloading a Wi-Fi Analyzer Tool on your cellphone to check wireless channel interferences, crowded Wi-Fi channel will cause a severe performance decrease.

The first bullet fixed the issue for me. I had prioritized a few devices and that was causing the deco to downgrade the available speeds to all other devices. Hope this helps!

Def not normal. I have the M5s, and I am seeing speeds in the mid 300s Mbps up/dw on my gigabit fiber internet link, and the M9s are supposed to be much faster than the M5s.

What firmware are you on?

What modem are you currently using and if its a Gateway are you using it in bridge or routed mode?

This is not a modem issue.  Connection speed between client and M9 AP is definately drop drastically as you move away from it.  Normally with my Tmobile Asus router I get 700Mbps connection with my laptop in the office.  I place the m9 at the same location and power off the old ap and setup m9 as AP I get only 200-300Mbps once it settle.  Initial connection will be 600Mbps but afterward it drop.  If I sit 7 fts away then I get 866.  THere no way to create addition network ID to setup seperate 2.4 and AC network.  End up return the setup and go back to my old setup with two Tmobile routers with one setup as Router and one as AP connect via ethernet.  These M9 also run hot.

Speed Range need to improve.

Need ability to create multiple Access Name.

Has the ability to use the backhaul channel to client connect if setup with ethernet backhaul.

I have a similar issue with the M9 throughput that started about a week ago.  I have ATT Uverse Fiber 1G down/up.  Before, I would routinely measure up/down of 600-850 both ways through the Deco M9.  This is both wireless (my computer is within 10 feet) and wired through the Deco GE port.  Starting a week ago, the Deco slowed to 50/300 for both wired and wireless.  If I bypass the Deco and plug directly to the ethernet port of my home network, I'm back to the original speeds.  I removed the Deco and set up my older Eero V1 and I could get full speed wired and 500-600 down/up wireless.  Definitely something with the M9

The only thing that changed around the same time is that I set the defined the Deco in a firewall DMZ on the Uverse router.  That shouldn't throttle the speeds.  Any ideas?  Hardware problems or configurations settings?

I have been following this conversation with high interest. I am also experiencing disappointing speed rates. I am now waiting for TP-Link experts to add some value to this conversation. The original poster asked some very concrete questions...

The speedtest for me looks good but my devices are buffering worse than my previous airport extreme setup.

Updating my post on 6/25 - I swapped the router connected to the internet and it fix my issue.  When I swapped back, the problem reoccured.  My conclusion is a faulty ethernet port on one of my routers.

@riverrick Did you have to do a factory reset on the notes you swapped, or were you able to just swap them without reconfiguring?

@Maven

Me too.  My wireless N Apple router (two in bridge mode) from 10 years ago has a far more solid connection than Tp-link. I am so sorry I bought this.....

@sugarman I feel the same ... mesh network is still a myth? Wireless with 3 decos in a 3200 sq ft home still has <20Mbps spots ... as is I have a range extender from one of the decos to connect in the basement to another router (Apple Extreme) just to cover my Apple TV in media room - otherwise Netflix pauses... :(
