Can I bypass my ATT Gateway & use my Archer A9 instead & then connect the ATT Gateway/modem to it as the access point?

You need a modem between ATT and the router. The gateway can be configured to bypass the gateway to a router. See for an example https://www.att.com/support/article/dsl-high-speed/KM1044640/ You can google your gateway model number along with "bypass" and get more detailed info.
