Model: Archer C7
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version: 1.0.15 Build 20200628 rel.63501(5255)

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand why my ethernet card can't establish gigabit speed with Archer C7 router.

Is there anything I can do from router UI side to fix that?

ethtool says my ethernet controller does support gigabit ethernet:

$ sudo ethtool enp2s0
[sudo] password for user1:
Settings for enp2s0:
       Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
       Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                               100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                               1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full

Though connection information shows that it's 100 Mb/s anyway.

Please advise.

@marchello

If you don't have a good cable (CAT6 preferred over CAT5e) or the cable is too long, you can't get 1Gbps. First thing to look at.

If you do have a good cable, try a different port, still can't, inspect the cable connector, seems fine, try another cable.

Thanks IrvSp! Speaking about cable, what exactly does 'too long' mean to you?

Usual length is 100 meters for 328 feet. Intermediate connectors can degrade that distance, as does the construction of the cable.

This page might help you, https://www.openeye.net/support/faqs/cat5-versus-cat5e-versus-cat6

Don't know what cable you are using, but that alone could be the cause. The device on the PC might be too. Even if it is capable of 1GB, it might have a setting that sets it to 100Mb.

I agree with @IrvSp I think it is the cable too.

If you happen to have another router you can possibly test on that to see if it follows the cable?

Archer C7 is my the only one that supports gigabit. Will plan to change the cable then. Thanks!

Switching ports on the router with the present cable will determine if you have a bad port.. If you do, a new cable wouldn't be any better.
