Model: Archer AX1500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.0 Build 20200827 Rel. 40928(5553)

Good day,

I’ve been having several issues since the router was upgraded, the issues are related to signal strength, I do have enabled Smart Connect.

Before the update I was able to have connection in all areas of the house with all devices as the router assigned them to 2.4G due distance now it forces every device to 5.0G thus lose connection frequently and have poor signal, I cannot manage for the router to use 2.4G as before, appreciate the help as the firmware upgrade just downgraded the overall services and user experience of the product.

I’ve rebooted it and still same issue.

I would turn off Smart Connect and reset up the WIFI parameters. Depending on your network, the router may not give you the best distribution of the devices. There are a lot of other posts on Smart Connect.

Appreciate the fast response, so the workaround is disabling a feature that was paid for?? Before the upgrade everything worked fine, shouldn't the company look for a solution for something that is being offered as a feature?

It works for many but does not for others. The mix of devices, quality of signal, volume of data, and other factors determines what is on which channel devices get put. It is not an exact method. For example a high speed device may be on 2.4 because it has low amount of data or the preferred band channel selection may have a lot of interference. Also some devices may select which band to use. It will get better as the product matures.

@ArcherC8 Yes I do understand and before the upgrade it worked fine, the issue started after the update of the firmware which was offered as an improvement on the service but it wasn't my concern here is the lack of attention on the company specially if the Smart Connect is a known issue as you commented earlier then why add mark up to a feature that doesn't work?

IMHO the upgrade of that feature is still dynamic in that they are tuning the specs to get the best balance for the most people. Since every network is different it will take time to mature and it will not work for everyone. In the software industry a lot of times the leading edge technology is called the "bleeding edge" for a reason. In your case the latest firmware for this feature was not an improvement but most likely helped many others. If it were me, I would not use the feature until it matures and makes an improvement for me. For example, the auto feature of some of the other settings such as the WIFI channel selection which in most cases works for the majority but some need to manually select the channels and band width to get the most out of their router.

@ArcherC8 I do understand your point and agree on the "bleeding edge" but as you stated earlier is a common issue for a lot people, it wasn't for me until I upgrade the firmware, if it's that common wouldn't it be a roadmap or plan for getting a solution? I haven't found one in the company page, do you happen to know of one and the lead time for it?

As note, the workaround did help, appreciate it, but again is disabling a feature that you paid for and as a user are expecting to work out of the box. (e.g. it's not an enthusiast router so it should work without any hassle)

@InfectedDAS

Smart connects intent is to manage what devices connect to which band. A common issue that users have is that they want the device to go to say 5G rather than 2.4G, in your case reverse.  In situations like that you are better off leaving that feature off since someone already knows what they expect or want.

In your case since firmware does not matter regarding your issue as of now, I would recommend reaching out to our support team. Typically, if firmware is the cause, downgrading would get rid of that so if your router still acts the same, then something could have malfunctioned.

I am a user like you who happens to try and help others. I have no knowledge of if and/or when a change may be made to Smart Connect which may improve it for you. We do not know how many networks were improved by the firmware upgrade which degraded it for you and others as people post when they have issues not when there was an improvement. I agree that a new feature should work as advertised and it may for many. There are to many variables in this feature to make it work for everyone. On most routers, you can go back to the older version of the firmware which I have done in the past.
