Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.1

Has anyone been able to get Time Machine backups to a USB drive on the AX11000 to work for more than a few days?

I can get it set up and working fine at first, but then after a day or two the backups stop working. They just appear to take forever and never get past "preparing backup". The network shares from the router also become unmountable at this point. If I disconnect the drive from the router and then connect directly to my Mac, I alwasy get an error that the Time Machine disk cannot be repaired and to recover data ASAP.  This has happened with multiple drives so I don't think it is a hardware problme with the drives. I can reformat and start over but the end result is always the same.  I'm hoping someone has a work around, otherwise, I need to buy a separate NAS...

@drexel13

Just want to confirm, are you enabling the Auto-Reboot feature on the router? what if you disable it, will the Time Machine work properly?

@drexel13 , could you please share if the support came up with a fix?

Thank you

@igorsf they sent me a special firmware to log more data around the issue, but I had already purchased a separate NAS as a work around so I never used the new firmware. Presumably they would be able to troubleshoot the issue with more data.

  @drexel13

I think I finally discovered the solution for connecting Time Machine connected and working as expected after trying a variety of solutions described here.

  • Format the drive at my computer with disk utility as Mac OS Extended (Journal) format and GUID partition map.
  • Eject the disk from the computer and connect it to the AX11000 router with a USB-C cable.
  • Under Advanced > USB in the router web interface, leave all Access Method boxes checked.
  • Under File Sharing, toggle secure sharing on.
  • Uncheck EFI (G:) and check (disk name) (H:). **I THINK THIS WAS THE KEY TO MY PROBLEM. Previously, I would check both boxes under File Sharing.
  • Toggle Media Sharing on.
  • Under Advanced > Time Machine in the router web interface, enable Time Machine.
  • Under Backup Location: select H: and storage limit of 0.0.
  • Save any settings along the way.
  • Return to the Time Machine settings under System Preferences.
  • Select disk and DO NOT encrypt.

Let me know if I need to elaborate anything I glossed over.

  @EFR thanks for all that! I'll try it out at some point. I ended up just buying a cheap NAS as a work around so for now, I don't want to mess with my setup. But this is good to know because I would like to simplify things with fewer devices.
