Model: Archer C5400X
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I am new to the community and have decided to transition away from Netgear products. I had recently purchased the Nighthawk XR1000 gaming router and this router would wipe its config if the router reboots, I even went through multiple. My question for all of you is this, I have purchased the CS5400x series however this router is not WiFi 6 capable like the 11000 series. Should I return the Cs5400 when I receive on Thursday? I have a technical background and understand routing/switching. I appreciate any feedback!

@PBedgood

Tough question.

Since every ones needs and budget differ it makes it hard to answer.

But here goes.

I prefer to pay a bit more to future proof my purchase and to get more machine (modem, PC, router,...) than I need and keep them for a longer period of time. Sort of grow into them.

Others prefer not to pay for features that they may not use anytime soon such as WIFI 6 as they do not have devices that support it or the speed from their ISP to make use of it.

So look at the differences of the routers and ask yourself if and when you will need those features and is it worth the cost to get it now or later.

For example, I have an Archer C8, which I got many years ago that still serves my needs at 200 from my ISP. Replaced my modem a while back with the fastest model when my old one was at end of life. I doubt I will ever need gigabit speeds but I think the 32 x 3 channels I am getting was worth it.

@ArcherC8 Appreciate the feedback! The AC5400X model is scheduled to arrive today and I honestly thought about setting it up to test its features, I have ATT fiber however I am using the POE switch bypass method from my ONT connection by forcing the MAC ID of my ATT gateway into the new router MAC. I am ready to order the 11,000 series so I am about to purchase from Amazon, I could not locate this model through Best Buy or any other retailer in my area at this time. Once I receive the 11,000 series on Thursday, it should be a simple swap to compare features, at that point I can then return the AC5400X series back to Best Buy for store credit or refund. I also noticed the AC5400 series appears to be about 3 years old, I definetely want to upgrade although you comment regarding WiFI 6 is true, our new iphones are likely the only devices that support the AX protocol at this time. I still have several devices including my smart thermostat and ring devices that need the 2.4GHz band, I figure it will take some time for WiFi 6. I really like both routers providing 8 ports, I have been limited to 4 on the NetGear products so I am really excited about the additional features.
